View Full Version : For those wanting to paint your own car *** UPDATE

Well i bought an extra fender for my s14 to try and learn how to paint on it ( use it as a practice fender ) LOL

Anyways i used the write up in the best of 240sx thread.
DIY paint (http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB21&Number=67847811&page =0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)

And i must say it came out great
The fender was green to begin with an i painted it black sandstone pearl. I must say it came out great. At the begining i was really intimidated by this as i have never painted before with anythign more than a spray can . It looks even better in person and with no orange peel and is staraight as an arrow . probably cuz i spent two days blocking it http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Opinions

Looks sweet!!! Very nice color. My friend is using the same faq writeup for painting his car. He's got it primered now and it looks like it should turnout pretty nice. He took out every ding on the car and they look smooth.

"For those wanting to paint your own car"- yeah don't do it, it looks like [censored]!

Just joking Jerry, I couldn't have picked a better color, great job. My car's next. Nice wheels btw.

Great job man. I must say it looks great. But remember the bigger the area that needs to be painted, the harder it is to make the paint look more consistent. I say, get your self a used hood and practice on that as well. Pick one up from a juck yard, if it has a few dents even better, that way you can practice on some body work too. Good luck. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I was scared it would come out crappy being as that i never painted , no experience whatsoever before. I bought the paint gun at harmorfrieght for 46.00 and it works great , its just time consuming sanding , i took it down to the factory primer then i wetsander that then i thru new primer on then wetsanded that , then i painted and cleared. Its not as difficult as i though it would be , im probably gonna get a carbon fiber hood and paint it bleack the same color as the car . Let see in the coming weeks on how the rest of the car comes out

Funniest part about this is the guy that wrote the how to in the archives (BattleKat)... his car is like four different colors lol. the fenders and mirrors are blue the hood is black the roof is black one side of the car is white and primer the othr side is white with the reminants of his ancient ass CF looking stripes and the front lip is primer grey. totally ghetto looking ass car! hehehe I really need to upload the pictures of it.

Just an updat on the progress. Engine bay is done and ready for paint its a little dirty and in this picture cuz i just finished wet sanding it, But take my word it is smooth as glass http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif I also have the roof and quarterpanels ready to be primed . i will post those pics later. I did go ahead and remove the quarter glass. From what it looks like to me the window trim is salvageable. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just painted mine myself.
(see bottom for details)

I took these pics with my camera phone, but after I buff out the whole car I will take some nice pics with a real camera in brighter light as to see all the pearl blue effects.
(yes, I am making the gas cap flush later)

THIS is what it really looks like in good lighting with a good camera)

THIS is with camera phone in low light (cloudy), looks purple

How much...

3.8 liters (thats 1 gallon) of paint, (main color) mixed to my wishes "add some more silver mettalic, add some more silver pearl, ok add some red pearl, now add some blue pearl, more, more, ok some white, ok.." etc.
3.8 liters of white base coat (like a primer but we didn't use, lol)
1 liter of black mettalic with blue pearl in it
1 liter of Silicon off (used for whiping down the car to get off all residue)
10 liters of clear coat
10 liters of thinner
5 liters of hardener
tall plastic mixing bowls
short plastic mixing/pouring cups
paper strainer/filters
= 20,000 ($200)

purple/blue flake, fine grain, from some US company = free
(but originally ordered for around $70 years ago by someone else)

Paint booth at Auto Hobby Shop on Air Force Base = $25 1 day (2 days in total)

Paint gun = free, my friend owns it

masking = $10 in tape, paper and vinyl tape, news papers free

sandpaper = free from friend who works in sheet metal for aircraft, 400g

sanding = my arm is tired, try to call as many ***** boys that will fall for it and come help sand, lol

spray the actual color = priceless friend named Ume whom I work with, he is a master, a fuc.king pro, awesome work, we tagged teamed my car. No charge from him. I will buy him some steaks and beer from the Commisary on base, lol.

That's how much it cost. Not much really. Especially since it is all spread out over a few weeks. The whole process is kinda long, but not that hard really. Just start wet sanding your body with 400 grit, the entire body, aero, etc.(days before hand and one quick go over before paint with sand paper and Silicone Off. Then mask it off carefully. Then mix your paint with right amount of hardener (10:1), and thinner (50:50) IIRC, then test spray on some paper or something, then start spraying.

Paint was Alesco brand.

Even when all the body is painted, the process isn't over.
Actually, before I sprayed the body, we needed to wet sand the roof with like 800+ grit. There are 8-10 coats of clear/flake and additional 3-4 coats of clear only. However some of the flake stands up and creates bumps, this is why we wet sand one more time after it's hardened for a few days. Then when we went back to paint and clear the body we cleared the roof one more time as well. Then once it's ALL done, I have to buff it all out using various compounds of liquids in a multistage process.
This is the hardest step actually. It takes the most time and involves the most work. It downright sucks, luckily my friend Ume WANTS to do it so more power to him.

This would probably cost around $4000+ here I would imagine. My friend Jimmy used to have an Estima van. He had it professionally painted at a shop, pearl gold, it cost HIM $4000 but he got a huge discount from the normal $6000.

Thanks for the words guys. My fingers still hurt from all the sanding ive done. Next up i have the roof and quarter panels and door jambs ready for primer so ill be priming those this coming weekend maybe with the doors if i can get to them.

Im still kinda up in the air on the color. I know for sure i wanted the engine bay to be that color but as far as the rest of the car goes, im a little bit on the fence. I was thinking the new titan red pearl or lexus blue silver or something like that. Evn though in the end ill probably stick with the black lol

woow....this is just more inspiring and motivating for me to paint my car. it's currently red and sun-burnt every where, let along the hail storm dings. the big problem i'm facing is painting the car to a different color instread of red. still debating if i should go thorugh the hassle of changing colors.
