Anyone know a reliable source for a good s13 red top tranny 5 spd. About every place i've called doesn't sell just the tranny.
thanks

Use a KA. Easier to source and cheaper.

do the ka's have the same gear ratios and are they as strong?

The KA and SR have the same ratios except for 5th (OD) which is 0.759 for the KA and 0.838 for the SR. Both are about the same in strength.

This is assuming that he already has a broken or auto SR tranny to swap the bellhousings.

Exactly. Throw a KA behind it, and then you can decide if rebuilding is something you want to look into. Expect to pay upwards of $600 to do so though, and that's using OE or similiar parts, so down the road you'll be back to square one if the power levels are uprated in your car enough to cause damage.
Most people just find a good unit and take care of it, avoiding abuse until it gives out, then swapping in another one. KA transmissions are a dime a dozen and can be found literally anywhere. I have four on hand right now and for the life of me don't know where three of them came from.

no! SR20DET and KA transmissions are IDENTICAL (including gear ratio) with the exception of the bellhousing and an extra syncro on 1st or 2nd (forget which). The SR20DE (NA) has the shorter 5th gear.

Just to make sure, the bell housing from my 5spd. sr tranny will bolt on to the ka tranny right?
