View Full Version : How hot should my diff get w/ a 1.5 way?

Like, pretty damn hot? I parked my car for 2 hours, and the exhaust was stone cold...and the diff was still hot enough to burn me. The subframe was pretty warm as well from the conducted heat. I wasn't out drifting or anything either...just an hour worth of traffic.

Its a Cusco RS 1.5 way. Installed last Sunday, still on break in oil (and I'm gonna do even more breaking in @ Willow Springs http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) ...yeah, I should probably change the diff oil after the first run. But if its smoking hot...I'm not sure I'll be able to.

It shouldn't be low on fluid either...I'm pretty sure there's more than enough (or is too much gonna cause it to overheat as well?).

That's pretty hot... Might be normal for breaking it in though.

My S15 HLSD doesn't seem to heat up the diff much more than when it was open. After about a 30-40 min drive you could hold your hand on it for about 3-5 secs before it felt "really hot." So maybe somewhere in the 135-150*F area I'd guess. Never touched it after going on track - I think having only 9 fingers might affect my laptimes otherwise I might give it a go with the ole' "hand pyrometer." http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif
