View Full Version : Which car to sell, need advice

Hey guys. One of my friends is selling a black 1990 eagle talon awd tsi. Grey leather interior, body is in awesome condition, but the engine is blown. I'm going to buy it and rebuild the engine, or buy a JDM engine depending on what's wrong with the original for $1500.

My family is moving to the country so my parents are buying another car as a "backup". They were originally looking for a mid 90's jeep yj, but my dad said he will "fund" my talon project (doesn't include mods :\ ) and it will be his car. I'm kind of reluctant to spend alot of cash in mods for this car and it won't even be mine. Plus I won't have that much to spend in mods cuz my s14 was pretty expensive to begin with. This would let me keep my s14 though.

On the other hand, if I convince him to buy my s14 from me it would put alot of cash into my bank account, I could get the talon and not worry about him or my mom messing it up, and the s14 would still be there (I don't want to give it up).

So which should I do? Sell him the s14, or sell him the talon? Either way I get both cars.

I'd let my parents buy another car. And I would fund the DSM project myself, no matter how long it takes, and keep it as a beater.

Rough decision. I'd have to say, if it was me, I'd get rid of the s14 and go with the DSM. I'm making that decision guessing you are still paying on the s14.. are you? If so, just think about no car payment and the beauty of turbo AWD. One drawback, You could end up paying a lot for transmissions. A friend of mine has went through 4 transmissions with his mildly modified TSi. It wasn't slow, he was running mid 11's but the AWD launches are hell on transmissions. Now his motor is fully built and he's shooting for 600hp so he'll be breaking more. That's the biggest problem for the DSM.

If you REALY have to keep only one of the cars, I say keep the s14. It's certainly more reliable than a half-rebuilt DSM, and you won't be the one stuck on the highway if something breaks http://www.freshalloy.com/

I believe he paid cash for the S14, so he doesn't owe anything on it. However, it did cost him "every cent he owned". Selling it would put some cash back into his bank account before he goes broke buying trannies again. http://www.freshalloy.com/ <g> (hehe, popshot! <G> )

Bleh my dad won't buy the 240 cuz he said he doesn't need a car that expensive.

I would say keep the S14, and don't even bother with the Talon project until you can afford it fully yourself. But that's just me...

keep the s14, the 90's talon will need serious cash to get running again, and fast at that. You would be better off saving money to spend on the newer car yourself.

i agree get a s14. there will be plenty of project cars in the future.

Redlightning: Exactly right http://www.freshalloy.com/

I'm not debating which to keep, only which I should sell to my dad (I still live at home so it would be available for me to drive too).

I just don't want my parents driving a 12 second turbocharged car that I built (even if its once and awhile).

I have to sell one to my dad. Can't afford the insurance on 2 cars.

Alchemist...Evasion is from Toronto, home of quick street Talons and a very active and helpful DSM community. It will cost him very little to get it up to "beast" status. In fact for the price of a turbo kit and the associated electronics for the S-14, he could probably run about 13sec flat or faster.
FFdet...an 11sec talon probably has about 400hp. hardly mild for a street car! http://www.freshalloy.com/

but my friend did, told me the body/interior was in great condition

McTwist: right on http://www.freshalloy.com/

I can afford the talon project, but only if I sell my s14 hehe. I'm bored with the s14, don't have the money to mod it. Building the talon should be fun http://www.freshalloy.com/ Plus I will learn alot by rebuilding an engine and putting it into a car.

i wasnt aware of the DSM community in Toronto. I still dont like the styling of the 1G dsm cars. what condition is the body in on your 90' talon?
