Ever since I was 10 and my parents picked up their first brand new car, I've been in love. My favorite Nissan in history is the 1985-1988 Nissan Maxima SE, shoebox style.

My parents bought a maroon 1987 Maxima SE brand new and it was such an awesome car for its time. It had one of the most powerful V6's for its class, five speed transmission, great suspension, sport seats w/donut style headrests that only came in the SE. What an advanced car for it's age, and it talked. How cool was that. I'll never forget sitting in the front seat and looking up and out of the gargantuate sunroof and I kept opening the doors to hear the magic voice say "door is ajar, door is ajar...."

I've been looking for one as a play car, but in my area they are next to impossible to find. I don't mind one that requires a bit of work, but the only ones I've come across all have the infamous frame rot. Living in the Northeast will do that to a car, especially the older Japanese cars.

Hmm, just figured I'd share and see if anyone agrees with me.

yes very cool car. my family owned a black 86 SE. The voice feature actually came out in the first 280ZX. then it was moved into the 1st gen maxima. i know ill be looking for another one later on. it was kinda annoying in the first one. we had a first gen max too. whats funny is that i currently have a 280zx turbo that still has the voice working one time i had a guy in a benz yelling at me asking if the voice was still working. i told him yeah and he tripped out and his wife was looking at him like an idiot. but the car is well kept and i expect it to stay that way. good luck with your find.

1st off Welcome to FA Gregor!

I loved the style of that car. What attracted me to the look of that year Max was the large Cornering lamps that seemed to be the same size on the side of the car as the headlamp was in front. At a front 1/4 view, it looked spectacular, especially after the mild redesign of the nose for '87.

The talking feature I believe ages back to the early 80's. A friend of mines mom had a early 80's (1980 I actually believe) loaded 200SX that talked.

The '89 maxima was a wonderful evolution of the Max's look. I always say that Gen 3 will always be my favorite look for the Max. However, I was not thrilled with the look for Gen 4 compared to the Gen 3, but once you drove it, you didn't care! Ahhh...the VQ and the car itself seemed of a tighter, more solid build quality. Even yet compared to my 02 and the Gen 6's. (I owned a '95 and now still have my '02)

But looking on the outside, Gen 3 and Gen 2 still turn my head the most. Ahhh....Memories....

But my favorite Nissan ever to this day is the '91 SE-R! Had one for over 10 years. I would love to have one again one day. But I am waiting for the Neo 510 Concept to become reality!

Oh yes, the classic U11 chassis Maxima.... calling it "great" wouldn't do it justice. I should know, I currently own one, an '88 GXE in white. My family bought it in '92 and I own it today.... the VG30E still SCREAMS to it's redline (that's a glorious noise!) and goes with authority. It's also pretty damned reliable. It was my high school car and often I'd rev it to 6k and drop it into gear..... and no, it didn't Chernobyl.... The only things I don't like about mine are it's digital dash (so 80's and a bad idea from the start) and it being automatic, but besides that, it's been a faithful companion and what ultimately led me to buying another Nissan, my Frontier Desert Runner.... and no regrets there either.

Ah yeah, those 80s Maximas were great.

I still miss my '91 SE 5-speed. A friend of mine totaled it http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We had many Nissans in my family, but kind of skip the 80's models....we had a wonderful B210 that performed like a champ throuoght the 70/80' and 90's....My favorite Nissan, the 510. Had 3 of them at different times in the past and they are a true Nissan classic. My "other"favorite: my 240sx....:) http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/auto.gif

You're right,
I remember 10 years ago, when I was young, my neighbor bought a Nissan Maxima '88, it was black, I remember running @ 125 mph, I said, I gonna buy one of these cars, now, I have a Maxima '90, it's pretty, leather interiors & seats, digital dash, digital a/c, 3.0 that runs like a new, sunroof, sonar suspension, totally comfortable, many people don't believe me that is a '90 car, Maxima is the four door sports car.
