- Touge Factory in the north burbs, is probably the only reputable SR-swap shop in the IL area I would recommend.. but their custom work is limited..
- turbo240.com is in the west burbs, has been specializing in high performance ka-t builds, and now starting their sr20 projects.. its working under AMS which is one of the most famous evo shops in the country so they can do any custom work you want for a good price.

Previous owner of my vehicle let the MSL do the job.
they took 6month however vehicle was not even close to finish. Sr20det which was not complete and didn't gave me back 1500 dollars. For me MSL would really stupid choice.
I really do not recommend the shop.

I would be cautious doing work with AMS in chicago, in a august of 2004 I purchased a 1997 240sx with a s13 blacktop that had a bunch of goodies on it, I was assured by Arnie one of the AMS owners who also owned the car, that the car was in proper working condition and had no mechanical problems. I was present when the car was tuned on the dyno, made 304whp @ 16psi on a gt3071r, and had no blow by what so ever. After purchasing the car and driving for 1100 miles i noticed that i was getting excessive blowby out of the exhaust and valve cover breather, along with a loss of vaccum at idle, and oil consumption. All signs pointed me towards piston rings, once i dissasembled the engine i found that the #4 piston had a 1 inch chunk between the ring lands completely missing. All signs point to bad tuning if you ask me. BTW I was told that the afr was 11.5 under boost. I will be going home this weekend so ill snap a picture of it so i can post it up here.

I probably should have added that once i started ordering parts for the car, i ordered the first set from AMS hoping to give them the benfit of the doubt, but after selling me a car that blew up 1100 miles later I thought that maybe theyd help me out a little on pricing of new parts, they still charged me full retail prices for the parts. I was really left wiith a bitter feeling towards ams after all of my dealings with them. The price that i paid for the car should have definelty guaranteed that there were no mechanical problems with it.

next time, hwkk, could you ask for shops that are in Indiana or Illinois, but that aren't in Illinois, and that aren't specific shops that you don't like, like msl....

I think the closest to you would be Drift Avenue. Its an up and coming shop. I took my car there to get it going with the lower tranny harness (no electric skills here) but the swap was pretty much done by me. They are located in Orland Park IL.
