View Full Version : KA/sr20 tranny swap (s13)

i did a search on this and i but a bunch of mixed answers and a TON of flaming.
so i am going to ask it again and maybe, just maybe, i can get the answer i need to hear (minus all the flaming)

will the KA trans bolt up to the SR motor? how bout if you swap bellhousings? or is it just not possible at all?

keep in mind this is for a s13 and not a pickup truck

the reason i am asking this question is because i need a tranny for my 90 240 really soon. but i would like to swap in a sr motor in the future. and i just can't see the reasoning behind droppin 750 for a rebuilt trans just to take it out and throw it by the wayside when i get the sr motor.

also, if i can keep the KA tranny, i will also be having a custom driveshaft made (w/replaceable u-joints!! any idea how much a carbon fiber driveshaft would run?? http://www.freshalloy.com/

If my memory serves me correctly (I'm sure i will be corrected if worng) you will have to switch up the bell housings on the transmissions to get it to bolt up the the SR.

I know for sure that you will not need a new drive shaft. So no custom drive shaft will need to be made. http://www.freshalloy.com/

the deal with the driveshaft is the u-joints are gettting stiff. and there is also a slight *clunking* noise when i accelerate slowly. and it is coming from the rear end. it's not in the diff or in the cv shafts. it might also be the carrier. but at any rate if i have a driveshaft made, it'll eliminate those problems and be stronger (i don't know if the O.E. one would need to be stronger, but oh well http://www.freshalloy.com/ )

The problem will be in finding a SR bell housing. We don't have any blown SR transmissions to take one off of. Maybe someone else does...

about finding a bellhousing...when you get one of these japanese engines don't they ship pretty much the whole front clip (minus panels) including the tranny?

i might as well ask another question to clear one more thing up for me...
to all you people who import sr20s and what have you, when you sell these engines...what exactly do you get? i was under the impression that you get engine, trans, accys. (ps pump, starter, alt, ac comp [if applicable] ect, ect...)
i have seen pictures of complete fron clip assys., up to the dashboard even! is that what i get when i order a japanese engine?
i'm sure it depends on where i get it from....

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial[/img]Yes it will work: I did it in mine. When you buy any Complete SR, be it a clip or not, you should get a tranny.

See the thread i posted after i did the tranny swap: (its in the archives--thats why it probably didnt come up under a search)

I would defintely recommend holding on to the tranny you are having rebuilt. I however would not recommend putting that one in during the swap. The KA tranny is geared HIGHER than the SR which in turn hurts your quarter mile times (a few tenths)
