View Full Version : Redtop SR Lower Wiring Harness problems

I bought this car with the SR in it, which I sometimes regret...times like now.

I've got my head off for head work and new headgasket. As I was taking out the screws that hold on the fuel rail (I forgot to take the battery off) a screw fell down and as I reached down to get it I bumped the harness and it sparked really bad. Then I realized the battery was connected (idiot!) and after I got my head off I took the harness off.... this is what I have.

First after I unscrewed the oil pressure sensor I noticed an orange with silver stripe wire hanging randomly out.

Can anyone identify this? I'm thinking it might have gave to the sensor but it's longer then the sensor wires. There is also a very small black wire that I can not find a connection for.

Then I found the problem wire....

It plugs into the altenator (not sure the technical term for it)

Does it look fixable or do you guys think it would be safer to just get a new one? The lower harness you dont have to wire a the ka harness into do you?

That entire harness is pretty easy. I recently did mine (can't find the pics)

Take out all the tape, and spread it all out.

Just match the wires to each other. And if you can replace the wire with equivalent gauge, just solder things in place.

Unless you can source the harness from another SR.

Good luck

Thanks, I guess I'll start taking it apart tonight.

Anyone have any idea what the orange with silver wire is and the black wire is on the first two pictures?

Shouldnt be too hard at all... like he said^ tear it down, solder and retape with equivalent gauge wire. Im gonna do the same thing to my lower harness just to replace the old wiring and such

I'm still trying to figure out what these two wires are. They were in the same electrical tape bundle. I imagine its the power and ground wire for some connection. The black with silver wire is much shorter then the orange and silver wire. The black wire also is just cut straight off and not stripped but the orange is stripped. I noticed the orange wire when after I unscrewed the oil pressure sensor and didnt see the black until I started taking off the tape.

I hope someone can identify it by the color. Here's a picture to show the colors...

The brown wire is the power wire for the O2 sensor and it goes to the 'brown' plug near passenger headlight.

The black wire is ground for sure.

What plugs do these wires go to? Or are they just spare pieces you found?

That's brown? lol I'm color blind... sorry.

I dont think thats the o2 sensor wire. This is the lower harness, o2 sensor is on the upper harness that goes to ecu isnt it? Double check just to be sure and all the wires to the o2senor are there. Unless theres some hidden o2 sensor wiring I cant find?

These are wires I found hanging out when I pulled my harness to fix another problem with it.

Hrm, I was thinking the brown wire thats on the upper harness that actually goes go the plugs near the front at the brown plug.

I know I have pics of my harness somewhere. Give me a min and I'll try to find it.

Edit:
Crap can't find the pics :(

I don't know how much of a rush you are in but in a few days I will be taking my lower harness out. I can take pics for you then.

Weather has been brutal here (lower then -25C) and my garage is freezing to work in :(

It'll probably be a little bit before I get my engine back together so it's fine. It's been damn cold here too... thank god for propane heaters.

Just a little update too. Here's a pic of the wires causing the problem. It's the ground and power wire going to the altenator plug (I dont know the technical term for it). I checked the fuse and it's ok.. any other problems I might have once I start the car? These wires did spark and smoke before I got the battery off... still trying to figure out what caused it in the first place.

just grab a new lower harness of of a parts car s13 and be done with it

fxiing it is a bunch of headaches and you never know if you find all the problems

whoever did your swap in the first place is a huge butcher

KA one will work too, it doesn't have to be SR.

Oh, I didnt know that. Thanks.

Anyone know of any problems that might come up from these wires grounding out?
