Last night we were coming back from dinner at some friends of ours. I was driving the EX35 (yes, my wife let me drive her car!) on Florida's State Road 836, better known around Miami as The Dolphin Expressway. For several miles The Dolphin runs right along Miami International Airport. Actually, their south runway runs parallel to 836, being only a few hundred feet away.

As I glanced at the Nav system at that point, I could clearly see the runway on the Nav screen's left hand side. And then I saw it. On the runway, there was an airplane taking off. It had those animated trails to depict movement and it was traveling east on the runway. It was so cool. I pointed it out to my wife who saw it as well (so I have a witness) and then for about 20 seconds our position on the Nav screen was running neck and neck with the airplane in some kind of virtual street race. We won. The plane, although moving, wasn't moving that fast. Maybe it was just taxiing or landing.

Anyway, wondering if others have had other interesting Nav system sightings.

Really? Could it have been just an icon showing that it is an airport? That's crazy! I've never seen anything like that.

Well, I'll try to get to the bottom of it by trying to take a picture or video next time. Don't get to drive the EX35 that often -- my wife doesn't really let go of it much. However, I really don't think it was an icon. I've driven by airports before, but this was the first time I noticed this seemingly animated airplane. In the meantime maybe someone else will notice it too.

Maybe the key is to be driving parallel and sufficiently close to the runway?

Still haven't driven by the airport again, but how many of you have set an Office destination in your Nav systems? Once you've set an address as your Office, every time you get within a few blocks, the Nav system barks. Like a dog, yes. It's like three short barks.

LOL, I couldn't stop laughing at this because I have the dogs barking when I get home (I have two dogs so I thought that would be cute). You can set sounds for certain destinations if you like. I'm not sure why your office defaulted to a dog barking though. I don't have it in front of me now, but I believe if you go into the Navigation settings you can change that. I remember when I first set up my destinations, the option was there to add the sounds, so maybe you somehow did that without realizing?

That feature alone, if on the new FX, may make me get one....call me simple. I miss my dog from childhood(haven't had one since) and that would be cool for coming home. The trumpet for work sounds cool too! This is good stuff that I'm sure the salespeople don't even know at the dealerships....

i was wondering about the whole airplane thing, if the nav is hard drive based, i dont believe that would be possible, unless its an xm nav traffic related thing

And did it show Mercury Morris running down the sideline of the Orange Bowl on the opposite side of 836?

Sorry, I grew up in Miami. Couldn't resist.

Well, we drove by the airport again, this time with camera in hand.

The airplane icon had only appeared to be animated only because it moves along with the motion of the car. But it's the same icon.

Woman drives through airport fence

An 82-year-old Cudahy woman accidentally veered off E. Layton Ave. and crashed through the perimeter fence at Mitchell International Airport this afternoon, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

Heavy rain was falling when the crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. just east of S. Pine Ave., said sheriff's Sgt. Phil Wentzel.

The woman was traveling east when she lost her way in the rain, veered off the road and drove through the chain-link fence, Wentzel said.

The woman did not realize she had driven through the fence and continued driving east on an airport access road until one of her tires went flat near a cluster of hangars, where she was met by sheriff's deputies, Wentzel said.

Neither the driver nor her passenger, an 85-year-old woman, was injured, Wentzel said.

The two were on their way home to Cudahy, Wentzel said.

The driver was cited for failing to control her vehicle and was ordered to re-take both the written and road tests administered by the state Department of Motor Vehicles to evaluate her driving skills, Wentzel said.
