My laptop only has a female serial output terminal and the rest are usb. The cable that came with my LC-1 kit is also a female serial output. Will a serial to usb converter work?I want to conver the lc-1 cable to put into one of my usb ports on the laptop instead. please help!

Yes, you can use a serial to USB adapter. Sometimes they are a bit of a pain to get to work.

If the other end of your serial cable is also female, you can just get a gender bender from somewhere like radio shack or Fry's. This is probably the easier solution. Then just make sure that the baud rate is set to the appropriate rate. Typically it is 9600.

I'm betting that port is your external monitor connection, not the serial port. Serial ports are ONLY male, never female.

Anyway, like everyone else said, use a USB to serial adapter.

Actually I think you're right. Looks like a USB to serial is the way to go. Get a nice one....those things are finicky.

I've been using the Belkin USB to serial adaptor for years with my AEM EMS, works just fine. You can get it at any Circuit City or Best Buy.

The Belkin works well in some applications and hit-or-miss in others. My experience, the only 100% reliable unit has been the Keyspan.

Is it hard to get the USB to serial adapter setup? Do I have to change any settings or is it just plug and play? seishuku was right, it was a monitor port and not a serial port. So I have to go for a usb connection instead now.

just plug the usb converter in, install the drivers than it should simulate a new com port... open the LogWorks software and try all available com ports...

(Ingnition musst be on to connect to the LC-1 device)
