Just wondering how affective they are? Are they worth the buck? Are they easy to detect by the cops?

Some are better than others. BUT ive been up there to the Canadian land, and they are really illegal, and the cops have radar detector, detectors (whatever they call em).
Recently took a trip to Virginia in a friends VW, and the radar/laser detector saved us 4 times. Picked it up about a half mile away.
I would say radar detectors are getting a little fazzed out, and you have to look for a laser detector, radar detector, with laser detection.

Also, you might want to look into those scrambler things. They ones that basically just make the radar guns come up with random #'s so you cant get a ticket. They are devoloped with cooperation from police forces, and are proven to block radar/laser.
But like i said, they're good ones',and bad ones', dont skimp, i would say pay atleast $160-220 american dollers.

good luck....eh.

The Valentine One is worth every penny. However, I had a cheap Whistler (I now have a nicer one) and they both have worked VERY well. You just have to learn how they react to different signals. It has saved my @ss MANY times. The one speeding ticket I have, I didn't have my radar detector in my car because I was selling the car.

about laser detector....Even the best radar detector will not be able to alert you in time!!!!

The laser beam @ 600 feet away is less then 1 feet diameter, the only way to detect that Radar, is to detect that 1 feet diameter signal, which won't be possible before you get got!

The only alternative is the LIDATEK Echo .... a laser jammer

Check this: http://www.radartest.com/3LASJM.html

BTW I live in Montreal ,Quebec, and I do have a Radar detector ! But make sure it's VG2 undetectable, like my Belltronic.

Thanks guys, if I'm out on the street can a cop detect my radar if I unplug it, say i start hearing it go off can, if I unplug it from the power it makes sense that the cop won't pick it up?

I got pulled over in Canada, and once we saw the cop behind us, we unplugged the radar detector, put it under the seat. When he came up to the car, the first thing he said was, give me the radar detector. He didnt like the "what radar detector?" response we gave him.
The ticket was over $200 too.
damn canadians, eh. JK>

DOBA,
If your up in Canada you should get a VG2 radar detector. The VG2 equiped detectors can not be detected by cops or so they say.

I have the Valentine One (V1) it is the best out there (doesn't have VG2). It's worth the $399 because what's cheaper, a speeding ticket ($100-$300+) + higher insurance or investing $399?

and KSX your right, if your speeding and you have a dector that has laser detection, when it alerts you about laser your smoked. Laser gets your speed in milli seconds. Sometimes you can get lucky as I did with the V1.

Check out C&D, they did a review on the fuzz:

More info about the V1:

Edit: About having your detector on and then you see a cop, unplug it ect. If your detector is on they know its on. If they pull you over you have to give it to them or sometimes they make you run over it and say have a nice day! http://www.freshalloy.com/
