Can I put a clutch type LSD for an open dif in a vlsd dif if I just use the output shafts of the vlsd? Is that the only difference? Or do I have to use a clutch type LSD made for a vlsd?

Yes. You just need the correct output shafts to go with the differential and the correct driveshaft to go with the differential case. Most USDM cars with the VLSD also had ABS and the sensor is in the snout of the case and makes it about 3/4" longer. As a result, the driveshaft lengths are different for ABS and non-ABS cars.
