View Full Version : belt? whining noise

I just recently started hearing this fairly-quiet high-pitched whining sound that sort of sounds like a turbo spooling up, except it's a constant pitch and volume. It sort of sounds like "ssssss" except it doesn't sound like air. I am pretty sure it's only of the belts. Perhaps some antifreeze got on one of them from the breather valve on the overflow tank that sometimes leaks during autocrosses and spirited driving. The sound only happens under load. Meaning, I can't just rev the engine with the hood open and listen around to see which belt it is, since revving in neutral doesn't put load ont the engine. What should I do? Otherwise, the car runs fine. http://www.freshalloy.com/

I'm KA-NA, btw.

could be the power steering...

my friend's altima makes turbo-ish noises when he revs it really high, and its apparently something many if not all first gen's will do, coming from the power steering pump..

Interestingly my SOHC 240 doens't do this, but my other friend's first gen "laser" (*does the quotation fingers ala Dr Evil*) does the same thing..

Check your PS fluid/pump. When I first started my SR up, it was really low and the pump was making a whining nose too. That's my personal experience with that kind of noise. Loose belts normally don't slip constantly, all the time, at least not for very long. http://www.freshalloy.com/

Is this noise most apparent when you start the car? If so, you need to tighten one of the belts running off the crank pulley. I had this problem after installing my ASP Pulley.
