how many of you guys have s13 motors in s14's? What are the problems with the legal aspect and have you had any problems legaly?

there are a few people that have done the swap. The problem is not really the year per-se. Yes in order to do a "Legal" engine swap in most states it has to either be the same year or newer.

Now the thing that you really have to look at is the fact that you will be installing an engine that never appeared in the US market, into a US market automobile, which is an illegal act.

So to sum up, if you go SR20DET you are going the illegal route, so why worry about what year car your new motor will be from. Just find one that will fit your needs and budget.

Wait, so is the SR swap technically illegal? Can someone clarify?

That question completely belongs in basic, but I'll catch it.

The SR20DET was /never/ emission certified for use in any car available in the U.S. Hence, it can't be emissions legal, which means it can't be legal, period. That doesn't mean that an SR can't be tuned to pass a sniffer test. But a visual test would absolutely fail. So, yes, the SR20DET is an illegal engine. You should do a search, there's gobs of info out there.

As for worrying about the year, a newer motor would (in theory) have less miles, so there's that.
