View Full Version : New Z; my thoughts

I very much like where Nissan was headed with the new Z, but IMO, there are a few major design flaws that keep it from being so much more than it is and I hope Nissan addresses the downsides before production. Anyway, here's what I see:

1) That front bumper piece is hideous with those whatever things to the sides and the single big gaping opening.

2) The headlight area needs improvement.

3) The rear wheels need to be brought forward closer to the driver (shorter wheelbase) and the back end shortened. The long back destroys the profile of the car, IMO.

4) The exhaust setup is not cool at all!

5) The taillights look odd, but mabe with the shorter back that I would like to see, they may be OK.

Any comments from others?

BTW, I love the wide fenders!

I agree with the front opening area needing some work.

I am pretty happy with the headlights but if they changed em around some and they looked better I wouldn't complain.

I think that shortening the back end will lose that z32 shape it has in the back area from the side which I like and also probably make it more like what some people are complaing about which is making it more bubbly

I like the exhaust a lot, I think it is a very clean and interesting way to treat the exhaust. so what if they did it on the boxter, on the boxter its just an annoying oval in the middle (i don't even think its integrated is it?) but with the z they have put a design though into it by still splitting it off as duals and having a geometric shape matching with other elements of the car and it matches with all the other aluminum on the exterior well

I enjoy the taillights too, I really don't see anything wrong with them.

And yes I too like the wide bulged out fenders

Whoa, I take it back, all i want them to do is fix the grille, i don't want them to change anything else. Take a look at the shots on this site, they are the highest res shots i have found so far and he shot em in person http://www.floydian.com/~seedyrom/300ZX/Website/srframemain.htm
obviously i want the interior of the one in detroit not l.a.

Yeah, I took those pics http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif Rest assured, at this other unveiling, it was announced that the front grille would be receiving some reworking as well as some of the lighting in that area (not the headlights). Check out my message on www.twinturbo.net (http://www.twinturbo.net) in the 350Z forum link. I go into great detail on what Nissan is working on between now and release as opposed to what is CLAIMED at the show. There was a LOT more information to be found at the employee only meeting that the Detroit one.

Take care!

This is the member formerly known as Hammerman. Dont ask me why I'm using this name it's a long story.

I'm actually coming around on the new Z. From some pictures it looks hideous, but from the pics seedy posted (thanks man) I can kinda see where Nissan is taking this vehicle. I still think a few things should be changed, but not much. The futuristic interior on the show car can stay. I in fact like it. I think the gauges in the middle remind me of the old car. Very cool, they should however make them bigger. Cant wait to see the final specs. Oh, one more thing, the wheels need to look more aggresive.

totally agree with you on the wheels and i am glad to hear that you are coming around. Does this mean we wont be seeing any more pics where the front opening could hold an entire human being in it? http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

I liked those wheels that were out of the jap mag scan that was almost what the real car looked like, i think those were nice. Or maybe if they had something like the current ones but instead of straight spokes they were more curved back as if in motion when sitting still. Oh well, its prob not too big of a deal cuz a lot of us will change them since we all have a different preference and we all want to have our own bit of style in the car that nobody else has.

I still think the view from the front reminds me alittle too much of the AudiTT. I'd like a little lower/wider look to it like the 90's Z-car.

i think it would be awesome if the z got similar wheels to the Se-R for production, those look sooooo coool.

I dunno, I just cant seem to get over it. I still think it is ugly. First Nissan, now Hondas are getting ugly. Audi totally destroyed the A4. Who's next?

I don't know why everyone hates the new car so much. I think its great. The thing you've got to realize is that times change. You can't always have what you had before. You've got to try something new. This is what life is about, taking chances. I can't remember who said it (it was one of the new z design engineers, I think), but someone said that you can only go Retro once, and then what do you do....better to keep inovating the Z. I can't wait for 2002.

i totally agree man, every time i look through the shots i notice something else that i like that i didnt see before. there of course a couple things that could be changed but no car is perfect and there is time to change a couple things still

i like the design quite a lot now. i do agree that the wheels should be more aggressive. a deep dish wheel design would look really cool, but probably not possible depending on the setup of the final car. nissan always seems to use wheels with huge amounts of backspacing, even on their trucks. it's ridiculous

btw, somebody should photoshop one of the pics to see what the convertible will look like. maybe throw on some different rims too.

OK, so I'm the only one that doesn't like the length of the back area! I've been looking at the pictures some more there's just something there that bothers me. So, I decided that it's actually a combination of the roof shape ane the back. To me, two things would improve the profile from the side:

1) shorten the back and bring the wheels forward like I mentioned before.

2) Lengthen the roof a little.

It just seems like the roof has a peak and they it's straight all the way to the little trunk-like area and that's not agreeing with me for some reason.

I decided I like the taillights and the headlights, but the front and rear bumper areas are still bugging me.

I have a photoshopped side profile that I will link later with the back brought in. You guys can tell me if it looks better that way or not.

I want you all to know that I really like the overall design and am just nitpicking. I guess I would just prefer the long front/short back type style of the original car more, but this one is still pretty cool. I especially like the wide fenders.

OK, here's my photo"chop" job on the side profile. I left the areas unfilled where I moved the back parts, so you will see how much I moved things. I'm not very good with photoshop either and didn't spend a whole lot of time with it, so please forgive me. Anyway, it's only a little shorter, but I think it looks better. Doesn't mean I'm right though! http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif Follow the link!

Hmmm, not bad, I like how it creates a kinda spoiler looking thing on the back there. Nice job. Go check out my Q45 hack jobs I posted in the Infiniti section. I dont think you'll have too much trouble finding them http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

chuck, that's not bad at all. it just looks too tall now, and the wheels look goofy http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

in my opinion, what they need to do is move the greenhouse back one full foot, using the opportunity to replace that freakish tail. also, if they are going to steal designs from german companies, they should take the front half of a z8. it flat out looks like an evolved 240z front end. unlike this monster...

I agree on moving the greenhouse back. Then, they could develop an inline 6 instead of the V6 to go under the hood! http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif For now though, I rounded off the top a little (taking out that really sharp peak) and flattened the whole car a little bit. Follow that other link for the new version. I'm OK with the wheels. Atleast the wheels can be removed and replaced easily. It's kind of hard to change the shape of the body at home!

The more I see it the more I like it. The things that I would like changed:
Front end, that grill is just atrocious. The first shots of the headlights made it look like a celica, but at different angles it looks more like a new version of the older Z's sugar scoop's.(very nice) The rear lights however need some work(way to much red) If they could do somthing like the Altezza lights it would make it look much better. The exhaust is another sore spot the car already looks alot like a porsche it doesnt need the boxster exhaust to, a dual set would be nice. And finally the gauges are to obtrusive, the silvia set up would work just fine.

One more thing the HP figures, I know its not final, but unless this thing has 300hp I will be very disappointed. The VQ35 is a very capable engine and 300hp with some massaging should be no problem. Hell with simple bolt on's you can almost get 300hp out of the vg30de in the Na Z32. As for a turbo option, no thanx I would much rather put on a Stillen SC for much less.( remember this is basically the same engine in the max bore out)
stock 300hp 3,000lbs = 1/4 mile 13.5 sec
SC ~400hp 3,000lbs = 1/4 mile 12.4 sec

This car is growing on me more and more, But there is one more thing that needs to go. Its fat rear end. If they could trim it a little, and move to a dual exhaust set up it would help get rid of the cellulite.

It is a dual exhaust they pipes just aren't one on each side. In fact when I was looking at it in person there are two small round openings right at where those shapes are with a mesh covering.

But there are two pipes from what I could see, not just a split.
