View Full Version : G20 Purchase

Hello every one. I am usually active on the 240sx forum but I will be buying out a dying breed of automobiles soon. How is the reliability of a late model G20? And are they tunable because the 240sx has been missed out on the import scene as far as parts and accessories are concerned. Please reply with your opinions as why to or not to buy a 2002 G20 (5-speed/sports package) Thanks.

Well the G20 uses the SR20DE, which I'm sure you're familiar with, so there's no question that the car is tunable.

In my experience, the G20 is one of the most reliable cars out there. My mom put over 200,000 miles on her 91 without any major problems before she got rid of it and went over to the dark side(she bought an Avalon images/icons/rolleyes.gif ). I have over 80,000 miles on my 99 (we like to drive in my family images/icons/wink.gif ) and haven't had to do anything other than the scheduled maintenance.

Thanks for the reply. Its a big decision because I am trading my 1.8 T jetta for it. The Jetta is much quicker but F-max is making a turbo kit for the SR images/icons/grin.gif so I am not that worried about power. Well I can't wait to get it this evening. I will post some pictures.

If you want fast, you're better off buying a car that's fast from the factory.

To me it's foolish to try to mod a new car. If you want to experiment, do it on a used G20. The older models look better anyways if you ask me (1996 and earlier).

Well I had a really dissappointing evening yesterday. My wife drives a 2000 VW jetta Turbo and we wanted to trade it in for a 2002 G20 Sport with 7000 miles. The problem we were facing is that this infinity dealer was giving us only 12000 for a car in mint condition and 35000 miles. When it should be worth 14335 dollars. Thats trade in value. They can easily sell it for about 18000 on the market. It looked like they did not want to sell me the car as they 465/month for 72 months with a 1000 down. I think thats BS. Cause my credit and wife's credit is good(high 600s) they even walked some other customers and I think to myself how does infinity stay in buisness.Heck these guys didn't even budge. I wasted three hours there while they f****d around. So what do you guys think and what are my options. Can I go a step above the dealership.

Also, financing for 5 years or longer will little or no down payment means you will ALWAYS owe more than the car is worth when you get rid of it.

I say keep driving the Jetta, put some money aside for a down payment, and buy a G35 (or something equivalent) in 2-3 years. That's about when the Jetta will start driving you crazy with repairs and other quirks. Enjoy the Jetta in the meantime.

Ah! I finally got it today...

Its a 5-speed with the sports package. I was surprised because James the salesman called me today and gave me a offer I could not refuse. So I went in and bought today. On my drive home, My wife was driving and called me on my cell phone to tell me the airbag light was flashing( I was driving my S-14 images/icons/grin.gif ). So tommorow I will find out what is wrong with the car. Thanks guys for all your help and advice and if your in Socal, Go see James Garant and Johnny(fleet manager)at Monrovia's Metro Infiniti.

That is out of whack. They are either charging you a ridiculous amount for the car (a brand new G20 with Sport can be had for around 20K from CarsDirect.com) or they are charging you a ridiculously high int. rate. Or more likely they are doing both. At a 9% int. rate (which is high) at 465/mo. for 72 mos. you are financing $27,000 images/icons/shocked.gif . Add in your down payment and they are hitting you up for 28K. Dealers almost always screw you on trade-ins. If you can swing it, your best bet probably is to try to sell the car on your own and then go deal with the dealer. If he still won't budge, order from CarsDirect.com. A friend of mine actually went through them for a purchase and she said it couldn't have been easier. Good Luck.

I took a friend of mine to the dealership I deal with and as she had a 1999 G20 coming off lease, next month with a residual of 15,000 I was sure she could do better on a 2002. She bought a loaded G20, including a dealer installed gold package and wood trim package for 20,500 plus T&L. The car has the spoiler and power everything, CD, Cassette etc. The Monroney was just under 25,000 plus the dealer installed "options" at 1900. it was a no brainer. images/icons/grin.gif

You are willing to be 2 - 4k UPSIDE-DOWN on a car so that you can get a new one???
Pay on your Jetta until you owe less than it is worth... A new car is not worth financial pain. Where do you want to be in ten years? Rolling over the last part of your G20 loan onto your current (10 years from now) loan? It is a nasty circle, and it will bite you in the a$$ someday.

post pics!! what color? what is it like....was it used or brand new? (7000 miles?) how much do you want for it..hehe. I really want a black sport with chrome 16"ers. I saw one too...and the i went bak and forth with my parents and the dealer...and we got the 23k price down to 20k plus t&l but then at the last second i figured i would wait because it was like 5mmonths ago..and i thought it would go cheaper. WEll last month i go in...and no SPORTS left!!!! AHHHH! i was going crazy. THe only G20 i would buy was one that is black sports with 16" CHROME wheels. The salesman said he could customize a LUXURY to look like a sport...but i dont like the interior wood trim...i really liked the dual colored leather like in the sport..that doesnt come in the luzury...i wanted the foglights...i wanted the body colored trim, and i liked the smoked headlights...damn it all. I am going to go back to my dealer and see if he could locate one...of coarse for only 20k plus T&L...i wouldnt pay more...but i will try carsdirect.com too..wish me luck.if i get it i will post pics...but i probly wont find it... :o  :(

nice purchase! what did you end up paying? i was looking at a red 1999 5 speed G20t before i bought the SVT. i love my wife's G20. i just wish she'd let me mod it!

we bought ours new for 23,000 and it has retained its value quite well. still worth more than we owe on it! we'll see how long that lasts.... http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

G20's last long, there are a lot of older ones (93-96) still going in Chicago's northside, "Yuppieville".

Got some pics up. You might have to copy and paste.

So finally they ended up paying full price for my upside down jetta and I am paying 450 for 60 months which includes tax and 4.9% APR interest. That is really good I think.

JWT has a carb certified turbo for use through 1999 models of the SR20DE.

Blue looks the best, a good way for the G20 to bow out!
