and does anyone know if a mid 80s 300z fuel pump is safe and compatible with my 93 S13?

Unless you already have an older one or can get one dirt cheap, use the 90's Z32 TT fuel pump. It's around $225 from Courtesy Nissan. Not a simple bolt-on, not for the meek (check out the exposed terminals and contacts immersed in the fuel!). Think of the displacement when you look to change fuel pumps - a 3 liter twin turbo no matter what year is going to have a high volume fuel pump.
