it's since you have last visited that forum, even if you have never read it. a brand new topic since you were there last that you have never read would be something like: 8(8) for example.

I think it stands for the number of different posts people have replied to in that thread.

For example if you look at the this read it said 5(5), before I posted. That means people have replied (by clicking the reply button) to one of the posts in the thread. If you look at the lakers thread it says 9(1) meaning only one person has replied to a post posted by someone else by clicking on the reply button. You'll see [re: membername] for those posts and the other posts don't have this.

Actually I hate how it automatically scrolls you down to the newest post even if you haven't read any of the thread. I always have to scroll back up. It's annoying.

Yeah, I just checked and the number change with new posts. I think Dorifto is right.
