View Full Version : "Incident" at Buttonwillow Raceway

Before you look at this, know the story behind it...

I was at Buttonwillow Raceway on January 28th with a few other list members,
SoCal *and* main list. In one of the afternoon sessions (running
intermediate group A) I got on the track and followed a few other cars
around, namely a MR2 turbo, M5, BMW 2002, Eclipse GS-T, and a few other
cars.

What happened next would piss off most track drivers.

The MR2, although fast on the straights, was such a slow car through the
turns. I would be parading behind the car in the corners, yet the driver
would not let me pass. This video was roughly on lap 3 out of 5 or 6 laps.
The MR2 almost spun out and went wide, but suddenly came back in and cut me
off. I didn't want to get in a wreck with a car that has a stupid driver,
so I backed off and thought he'd let me pass later... Oh how wrong I was!

The rest of that lap was pretty much self explanitory. His 250+HP obviously
put me at a disadvantage on straights, but the rest of the video speaks for
itself...

Oh, and if you want to critique my driving skills (or lack of) email me
privately.

(Feel free to add this to your collection of videos)

Huh??? What are you trying to say?

What do you mean camels and armpits? I have no clue as to what the heck you are talking about...

And I'll be at Sears Point in July for the ALMS race.

Something I forgot to add...

After this incident, I was stuck behind the MR2 for another 3-4 laps. When he finally let me pass, the hot-lapping session was over... http://www.freshalloy.com/

You should have just passed him in one of the turns but on the other hand that track looks rough and dirty so I understand your cautiousness. I however, am too impulsive and would probably do something stupid. Since my 240 is way too slow, I sometimes get to drive my friends talon tsi here. BTW how many hp is your sr putting out, the MR2 weights ~2900 so he would not have such a weight/hp adventage.

man that guy is an idiot. im sure glad i was being passed by all the touge guys at streets instead of being stuck behind people like THAT! he was all over the place...

Actually, the track is quite clean. I couldn't pass him in the corners b/c it's not a race! No passing is allowed in the corners, and I'm not stupid enough to get black-flagged for it. Plus, if I tried any bonehead moves I might risk damaging my car, something that's unacceptable for me since this is not a race.

As for my car... it was my 155HP KA engine vs. his 250+HP 3S-GTE. He has at least a 100HP advantage on me.. and IIRC, the MR2 wasn't *that* heavy... Oh well, I showed him what's up. http://www.freshalloy.com/

he fell off the course, rather than let you pass.

his car was way more modified than yours, but he didn't know how to use it. i hope no one posts "MR2 has 200hp not 250!!!" because you also forgot to say how modified he was...

My bad I didn't know you could not pass in the corners and I SWEAR I thought you had an SR in your car. For 155hp you sure were all over that guy. I want a DOHC http://www.freshalloy.com/

Which is why I preach road racing to everyone I know.

I don't bother myself with Honda's or whatever other compacts, because every car has its own advantages and disadvantages. Most FWD Honda's have a weight advantage, and any aftermarket power booster will tip the scales in their favor. Our cars, however, can run with the best of them if given the proper suspension setup. Me personally, going to the track and running around all those "other" high HP cars just makes me push myself farther and faster. Honda, who wants to race them!??! BRING ON THE VIPER!!!!! http://www.freshalloy.com/

Alex your such a pimp with you sunroof open riding around. For the mr2, don't you wish you had a truck at that time to just t-bone him. http://www.freshalloy.com/ I'm just kidding. Your car sounds great, I want one of Alex's exhausts!

alex: nice driving http://www.freshalloy.com/ d'u smack the mr2 driver upside the head afterwards?

talk about more horsepower than iq.. with an m/rwd config@250hp, he should own everybody's ass on the track. but he's a bonehead.

anyway, who organized this event, and is there passing allowed on turns? scca rules are very anal about this sorta stuff and i'm curious as to how you planned to pass him on turns. or am i getting the wrong idea.

thanks, and drive safe!

i was there too, so i hope you don't mind me answering your question. The event was put on by Speedtrial. here is their site: http://www.speedtrialusa.com/index.html

alex's exhaust is the turbo version of the 5Zigen fireball exhaust i think. alex can tell you more i hope.

Thanks. No, no smacking afterwards... I was fumed at what happened, but I took some time to cool down and didn't want to bother myself with it afterwards. I actually specifically switched to the advanced group for the last session just so that I can avoid him... turned out to be good b/c I had lots of open room, with high HP cars passing me left and right... http://www.freshalloy.com/

Like Hypercarrots said, SpeedTrial organized it. No passing is allowed in the turns (unless it is a big sweeper and the driver waves you by), but I don't know how the corner workers missed that slide the MR2 made... It was just a hot-lapping session, not a race, so I think you were getting the wrong idea.

As for my exhaust, it is a 5Zigen Fireball T/C version (70-80mm piping) with no silencer. Too damned loud... with my Simpson Bandit helmet, it made a droning noise in my ears after about 2 or 3 laps... next time I run, I'm doing it with my stock exhaust so I can sneak up on people and hit them with something they can't hear!!!! http://www.freshalloy.com/

I too am surprised that he(MR2) was not flagged by a corner Ref. As the rules state, with a little character added, upon venturing out unto the wild, one will look and yield to anyone whom is ON the track and approaching. Only to come back onto the track from cattle grazing when clear and safe for all.

I might be mistaken by what is the point of getting the turbo version of the 5zigen exhaust if you are running N/A and doesn't this rob some serious torque in the low RPM range for maybe 2hp at 6.5RPM. I hear that anything over 2.5" is a waste of money if you run N/A, unless you have a V8. I'm thinking of getting an exhaust soon and this would help me out.
thanks

Oh yeah I forgot, If that MR2 would let you pass Alex, wouldn't he catch up to you on the straights and that pass you?

Just a thought...

the MR2 didn't let Alex pass, Alex got by him when he went off track a 2nd time and couldn't get back on in time to cut Alex off!!! haha. but like Alex said, unfortunately the session was over at that point...

AND, he has that exhaust because he was going to install an SR20DET.

Well, I got it b/c of a couple of reasons...

1) I had a SR20DET planned for my car, but b/c of circumstances beyond my control I ditched the SR project and went back to a stock KA engine.

2) I ordered the T/C version b/c I needed a turbo exhaust, and I wanted something that no one has/had in the U.S.

3) Mr. Mukai of 5Zigen's factory in Osaka gave me the exhaust for free.

It's not as simple as that.

Usually if a faster car in the corners passes a car that is slower in the corner, the car that passes will usually stay in ahead after a few more laps. Regardless, he was holding me up and he should have let me pass, both as a courteous gesture and out of simple respect. If he proved he is faster than me after I take the lead, I'd be more than willing to relinquish the lead position to him...

Actually, he let me pass b/c I slingshotted my way past him. That last lap I was *determined* to pass him regardless, so on the last turn onto the front straight I was so close to him that I was scaring myself... (probably no more than 5-6 feet).

So how does that exhaust feel on your car? That's cool that you got it free. http://www.freshalloy.com/

What I had in mind was that if he let you pass him and he got you on the straights than you would be back to where you started. But that was just a thought.

5-6 feet thats a nice way to intimidate someone, especially if thay can't see your headlights but just a part to the hood in the mirror. Unless you have those 300zx brakes and some nice pads than it could be scary.

Oh, BTW I just installed KVR carbon/kelvar pads in all 4 and let me tell you guys that they suck. They do require warm up, and their initial bite is less than of stock pads. The only benefits are no fade, decent stopping (only marginally better than original) and small amount of brake dust. To these require slotted or crossdrilled rotors?
I might as well post this as a new topic too.

With the exhaust, I lost a ton of low-end power as I expected... but top-end was awesome. Too bad I shift at 5500RPM when I'm at the track...

As for brakes, I have this:

How much does it cost to run open track? What safety equipment do I need to run? Helmet (what snell rating). I notice you were wearing gloves Alex. What about seat belts? Stock ok?

It pretty much depends on the group you run with... usually $100-140/day.

You need a SA-95 or better helmet, and pass a simple tech inspection of your car... everything else is optional.
