Is OEM not good enough for you? I fail to see the point of "upgrading" when the OEM thermostat is the best one out there on the market. And for $~15 each, you can't beat the price.

If you get a hotter thermostat then you will get slightly better fuel economy, and if you go colder then you reduce the risk if detonation if running a higher than standard copression ratio or more boost.

I'm using a 76.5c (170 f) thermostat the standard one is 82c (180f) degrees, I wasn't getting any detonation but I am running 18psi so I didn't want to take any risks.

Changing the Plug Heat range WILL ALSO achieve the same goal. And more efficiently.
As you know, detonation is heat within the Cylinder. So cooler plugs and smaller gap will remove heat within the cylinder.
In combination, you should be able to increase your bar and be O.K..

I'm running NGK PFR7 platinum plugs, the recommended gap is 1.1mm but I can only get an effective spark at 0.75mm due to the increased boost.
