View Full Version : Video - This Exhaust get me pulled over in Cali??

I have a highly modified version of the Buddy Club Racing Spec 1 on my car right now in Japan. I will be building up a 240sx in California come February, and I am worried about the prying eyes of the CHP.

My exhaust system has no muffler in the back, but just a straight stainless pipe exiting. It looks like an American style muffler... the muffler is up under the car and the tailpipe is just that - a tailpipe. Its not very loud, definitely within the limits of the law. (because we added a huge secondary muffler to the catback - it never goes smaller than three inches all the way out, mufflers have 4 inch inner diameter)

This video is of my car when it was still black and had a stock back bumper. This is more than likely how it will remain in the states. I will raise the pipe up a little to run with the stock bumper, because it doesn't need to be so low. (with my aftermarket bumper, its a perfect fit and the tip is right where any other muffler tip would be) You can hear the car is a bit rich in the video... this was with the old SAFC setup.

Right Click and Save Target As for best results.

i dunno.....maybe...

i would suggest using two dynomax straight tru mufflers the 3 inch ones look like resonators, + a blacked anything or what we have done before shove a three inch pipe staight thru the stock muffler.

I doubt youll get bothered but it depends on your driving style, i drive like im trying to stay under the radar of the ss. seriously i act like every turn could be a cop and if i see one i pull into a gas station and wait for him to go buy.

I have a apexi n1 style muffler that has been painted flat black...

id say watch it with anything shiny and leave the outside looking stock no body kit at all, black or gunmetal rims are ok no shiny or bigger than 16s.

ive been dicking around with cops a lot in LA and this seems to be the savest route if you want to be able to drive normally in traffic and not worry about anything..

-steve http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/tear.gif cali sucks on that end...

Yeah, the muffler I added is a Dynomax Ultraflo Round. Its a 6-inch diameter outer and 4 inch diameter inner. I plan to do some more fabrication on it to use two of them... we'll see how that goes. The other muffler right now is the Buddly Club muffler, which has a 4 inch inner diameter and maybe a 5 inch outer diameter... its almost useless. The car with the straight buddy club muffler sounded like ASS. I had to modify it just so I could stand the sound. I love the flow and looks of this muffler, and thats why I bought it. I just ordered the Dynomax on the same day as the cat-back to combine them before installation. The front half of the Spec 1 is 70mm, we eliminated that as well.

it looks like it could be made stock enough looking. If you are following the other got caught by the CHP thread you can see that the CHP atleast is aware of FMIC's...that might be an issue I forget what you run

Seriously considering an air/water intercooler now. It would be pretty inconspicuous with the hood closed.

You might get away with it in Cali, it would be better if you just paint the tail section black. Just don't go F1 around town and you should be good.

Run straight pipe, dont get your car noticed...should be fine.....just dont shoot flames at cops....thats all

The shinny stuff will prob get there attention. Then he will prob pull over and say you don't have a muffler even tho it's under the car. then after he see's it he prob will say ohh yeah pop your hood. It dosen't look too big at all just shiny gets there attention.

Heh... I got a possible job offer out on the east cost of florida... It seems to be a little too far out of civilization for me though. My mom lives out there, and it is a possibility... but you guys got too much humidity, and the Hurricanes scare the crap outta me. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Humidity you will get used to, its not that bad. Hurricanes? You should be more worried about the CHP then hurricanes. CHP strikes on a daily basis, hurricanes maybe every 20 years. Most of them pass us by and nail Georgia and the Carolinas. I love this state.

"This Exhaust get me pulled over in Cali??"
I run no resonator and cat; and have no problems with chp. Granted I do drive conservatively, but I have yet to be pulled over for the past 2yrs in my 240sx. The whole chp thing in cali(I live in norcal) is over exaggerated.

They don't usually just pull you over for just a exhaust. If they do you were probably doing something stupid.

Just granny shift and you'll be fine.

As far as FMIC goes, do what my buddy Glenn did -- he painted his IC black (well, not "paint" but he "coated" it with some such stuffs that made it black).

Nice quiet place, been to this girls beach house there a few times. Its not too far from big city either. Being that our dense population is slowly moving north, buying a house in that area would be a great investment. I know of several people that made a killing off realestate in south florida. Others have houses that they bought 10 years ago that are worth more then they paid for them.

So if I were to move to Stuart Florida, I wouldn't be too far from the race track? How long will I be travelling to run where you other guys run your cars on the drag strip?

I know nothing about Florida geography... but a lot of you guys are in the Tampa Bay area, right? Thats a couple hours from Stuart, is it not?

I have seen pictures and heard stories from my mother that Stuart was nice, but I was afraid its too far in the sticks for any sort of drag racing on the weekends. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

No way, Moroso Drag Strip is not far at all from Stuart. Thats where everyone I know in the Ft Lauderdale area goes. Its closer to Stuart then Ft Lauderdale. And Tampa is only a couple hours away. There is definitly a growing scene down here and you would be a good addition to it for sure. Not having any emmissions testing makes life alot easier also. We use to have it but not any more.

Well, thats not bad at all.

Does anyone know of any Japanese communities in the area? Like where I can find a Japanese Grocery Store, or Japanese Book/Movie shops? My wife is Japanese, and stuff like that can be pretty important, too. Heh heh... I'm getting relocation advice over the internet. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

South florida and Japanese stuff? I don't know you may be able to find some places, but that is a predominantly spanish community. I used to live in orlando and there were almost no specific Japanese stores. But, there were lots of other asian markets usually run by Koreans or Vietnamese people. They tend to stock a lot of common Japanese foods. Miami/stuart/Ft. lauderdale should have similar shops. As far as Japanese books and vids go, if you can't find them locally you can get them through www.fujisan.com (http://www.fujisan.com) or kinokuniya (major book store in Japan around tokyo, they have one in LA and NYC now). Also if you use Dish Network you can get a subscription to the Japan channel. Which is a direct feed of news broadcasts, dramas, and other programs from Japan (mainly NHK and Fuji TV). A plus for the food is that you should have a good selection of fresh fish down there to use for sashimi and other dishes.

Edit: I forgot, there is a Japanese Consulate in Miami. Typically in cities with consulates there is a small Japanese community to go with it, thus you there may very well be some Japanese stores for food, media, etc. Here is a link to the miami consulate:

hugh you ever thought about just getting one of those valves that switches from open downpipe to exhaust and back again? just roll stock exhaust until you need to unleash and then back to stocky again.

i rode in s13sr20's car after he got the stock back on there...holy mother of god its so quiet....peaceful..

Better then that would be this muffler. (http://www.aebtec.com) I am running one with straight pipes. It is f(_)cking awesome. I cruise quiet until some chump in a Civic pulls up next to me, then I open it up and unleash on his ricer ass. Its not all chrome and flashy either. I'm going to do a post on this muffler as soon as I take some pics and sound clips.

With my last car, I had a Greddy painted flat black with high temp paint (1200 degree) from Kragen. Sorry but I don't have a pic of the muffler, car's gone.

You can cut 10+ minutes off that trip by getting off I-95 at the right exit. As a bonus, you'll be on a perfectly straight smooth road out through some swamps for a few miles, I usually hit 120+. I've seen sport bikers messing around out there too.

A quick google search turned up this Japanese museum and gardens (http://www.morikami.org/). You could probably find out what you want to know by emailing them directly.

One of the bad things about florida is the lack of any interesting curvy roads. If you're into going fast in a straight line, though, there is plenty of opportunity!

Doesn't sound too loud from the video. But then again cops in LA pull just about anything over. I'd worry about orange county especially irvine if you're around there. But it doens't look too bad. *Fingers crossed*
