I have a question for the experts. The stock S14 has something around a 4.08 rear end ratio. I saw kits for both the 4.364 and 4.635 ratios.

The reason I am asking is this... I have a KA-T. The car is automatic, and I have heard that by changing to higher gears it would reduce quarter mile times without having to further tweak the horsepower. Of course, my top speed would suffer and the car would generally rev higher.

What would the effect of 4.364 be in relation to 4.635 rear? Would the 4.635 totally kill top speed to the point that I would not hit pass 110? If anyone is an expert on this matter please feel free to explain. Thanks.

10% more acceleration. run through a gear calulator theoretical top end on a 4.36 (SR tranny basically same.. 5th gear a little taller than KA) is 168mph range.. so figure a littlle lower than that. dunno what the ratios on the auto are though. you will still have plenty of top end.

P.S. almost forgot wheel/tire sive will play a factor in all this too. my wheel and tire combo at the time that calculation was ran was 17x7 with 225/45 on it. everyone I know with the 4.36 and the 4.63 loves them.

Actually it is from Nissanmotorsports, but Courtesy nissan just added their stuff to the website. I have never had a problem ordering from either nissan motorsports or Courtesy so I though I'd find out more about it.

I run a 4.90 in my 180sx. It killed top end and made highway driving suck... but I can still get over 150mph.

My friend has a 4.66 in his 180sx, it is pretty nice. It's a good balance between normal gears and really short gears.

The automatic KA's don't have a 3.9 like the auto SR's and CA's do?? Hmm...

I would think an automatic with a 4.3 would rock.

Nope. Do the SR and CA autos have different ratios than the KA auto trans?

I seriously don't know anything about a CA or SR auto tranny. I had someone ask me the other day if we had one at our shop... he started grinning before he finished the question. We laughed.. he said, yeah, I figured you guys wouldn't have one.

The only thing I do know is that the CA and SR had 3.9 finals in the automatics. Some people will use them for whatever reason... like if you have an S15 tranny and can't get the 3.6, the 3.9 will be better than the 4.08 or anything else, you know?

Im my market The CA (13)(200sx) 180sx came with 4.3 AT and MT
The SR (S14) (200sx) Silvia came AT 3.9 and MT 3.6

I think but I am not 100% sure that the Sr (13) 180sx came AT 4.088, but I am sure the MT were 4.088.

I would love to see a AT with a 4.6 or 4.9 with some slicks and a high stall custom converter. That would be interesting, spool the turbo on the line.

It is my plan to swap in a 4.6 final in along with ATS carbon LSD and hopefully Enjuku aluminum driveshaft shortly after the 1st of the year. I'll be doing a full review on my impressions. I dont ever plan on exceeding 150mph anyway, so I'd just rather get there faster.

Good idea Vapor. I was always thinking that going with a little longer rear end in a KA-T would be good thing, which it would be for certain things. But I just recently started thinking about that same idea.

Edit... was thinking maybe 4.3Xish, gonna wait and see what your impressions on your setup are before I decide.

on a basically stock SR (FMIC Intake mani and 14psi) first gear is short enough that it barely builds boost. makes the car verrrrry fun http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How difficult would you consider the install to be? I don't have a problem buying the kit but would like to know what I'm getting into ahead of time. Thank you.

on a scale from 1-10 i would say its about a 7. pulling it down is easy, first make sure u mark the parts, so u know what goes where, also you have to shim the clearance between the ring and pinion gears. You may have to buy the shims seperately from R&P, as I don't think they are included.

I got mine used. (CA powered car rear end, some of them had it stock) bought it for the Clutch type LSD and got the 4.36 as a bonus http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif for me install was simple.. unbolt old diff remove rear cover put S14 rear cover on other pumpkin and install. easy.

Does anyone have a link to a website where I can buy these gears. I want to do 7300 rpm Ka s14 with lsd and 4.36:1 rear

TIA

also by changing the final gear ratio, the load on the engine will be greater so your car will require a retune... right?

That reading thing must kill you. Especially when it's already mentioned twice in the thread.

Hey now that I have the 4.6 rear in the car along with 45 series tires I think 4.3 would have been the one to go with. The automatic will only reach about 120 before running out of rpms in over-drive. I can only reach about 105 before hitting the rev limiter in drive with over-drive off.

while on the subject, does anyone happen to know if the same gearsets that the r200v use are compatable with the r200h? while having a 200mph topspeed is cool and all,it kinda sucks for getting down the 1/4 mile.

4.6 is too short for freeway driving. I know, because I've driven one on the expressway in Japan, and it was good for about 60mph...

You don't want to drive for an hour at 80mph on a 4.6!

One half useful post, great. You have a chip on your shoulder for some lame reason. Why don't you just get off the forum altogether? Or find a way to not be such an over sensitive child?

You are the epitomy of the pot calling the kettle black.
