i pulled both my motors appart and started comparing flywheels and I noticed there was much less material on the redtop fly than the s14 sr fly. I weighed them and the s14 registered 19lbs as I expected but the redtop fly weighed in at only 11. Is this an oem flywheel? It doesnt appear to be aluminum but it could possibly be some sort of chromoly. Maybe a modified oem. It doesn't look like cast like my s14. The cluth that was in the redtop was a severely worn oem and the fly has some heat marks on it. (purplish blue discoloration)
I will try to take some pictures when I find my camera but until then I would like to know what fly it is and if it is safe to use.

congratulations, you probably have an aftermarket flywheel such as jun or toda on your car!

Hm, you can't resurface it tho...so it may be a curse.

Why can't it be resurfaced? Should a fly be resurfaced at every clutch change? If not, at what point should one be resurfaced?

Chromoly steel is a hard material. hard to machine. Although I'm sure a good machine shop could do it, a normal automotive shop might not take on the task. A shop that can blanchard grind the flywheel rather than cut it will probably be best.

Yep. In your case, since there are signs of heat discoloration, it could be somewhat distorted as well, so I'd consider resurfacing a must-do.

my SR also came with a 'moly flywheel. i noticed when i pulled it off to have it resurfaced and stuck it on a scale.

of course it also had a roasted 3 puck clutch attatched to it too http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
