I've been doing Atkins for about 1 1/2 years. It works well when done properly. So I get home the other day and my wife got a magazine from Kraft Foods. I flip throught it and see a full page add for low carb. I thought "Cool. Its nice to see another company producing low carb." It says to see the article on page 39. I turn and read. It basically says that if you do Atkins, you'll die. The "nutrionist" says that if you don't eat a 135 grams a day, "your brain will not function." Maybe that's what happened to me. I know that NIH has been pushing the eat more carbs/low fat stuff for 30 years, but really. I think that Kraft needs to look into it a little more before making such statements. Here are some examples of the current trend. (I am not alone.)

I really needed to lose some serious weight and I have but I couldn't go on the Atkins diet because I like fruit and veggies to much. I just watch what I eat and have only eaten fast food (SteaknShake) once in 4 months. I don't munch on candy except once in a great while but I will eat twizzlers. And I no longer eat donuts or any of those good things except for Bdays or holidays and then I'll eat cake or pie.

Atkins is not anti-fruit and veggies. I eat veggies alot. You just have to be selective, depending on what stage you are in.

Whatever the method, I'm happy to see that more Americans are trying to loose weight. I heard on the radio yesterday that the United States spends $35 billion dollars in tax money on obesity (medicare/medicaid), and the insurance industry spend an additional $35 billion dollars. I think that just goes to show how bad it has gotten.

Stumbled across the article while reading the news...

Taxpayers foot the doctor's bill for more than half of obesity-related medical costs, which reached a total of $75 billion in 2003, according to a new study.

The public pays about $39 billion a year -- or about $175 per person -- for obesity through Medicare and Medicaid programs, which cover sicknesses caused by obesity including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, several types of cancer and gallbladder disease.

Well if you think about it, it's a big priority to keep good health.

I just hate to see people diet. Controlling the size of your portions, watching your fat intake and exercising are much better ways to achieve long-term good health, plus it's something you can do all of your life. Just eat sensibly and exercise. And America's obession with dieting isn't always a good thing. Remember Phen-fen?

from what i have seen most people follow the atkins diet completely carelessly

it works amazingly well....but its become a fad and it wont work for 95% of the people because they do it improperly or cheat

a woman that comes into the resturant i work at has been eating burger patties and steamed brocoli for a year and a half and hasent lost a single pound...somthing tells me she is cheating on the side....like maybe the glass of soda she has with that burger and steamed veggies every day http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/rolleyes1.gif http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/rolleyes1.gif

i mean seriously people...going on the atkins diet for a year and a half should kill you...or give you some pretty severe mal-nutrition

as far as all the resturants and food companies selling atkins friendly stuff...i think its just a corporate gimmic to get people into their resturants...frankly it disturbs me because it makes it easier and easier for people to get started on a diet they plan to do halfassed

There are different stages of the Atkins diet. Being on it for a year and a half will not kill you.

And I've been waiting and waiting for food companies to sell low carb stuff. FINALLY they do! It sucks paying $2 for a one ounce bag of low carb chips. If Kraft...scratch that....Nabisco and others want to make a wise business decision and sell to people hungry http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/rolleyes1.gif for reasonably priced low carb stuff, I'm all for it.

Atkins doesn't work half-assed. If people want to go on a diet and not do it properly, then that's their problem. Don't make the committed brethren of the Atkins Order suffer for the half-hearted heathen ( http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gifIt really does seem like a religion sometimes...but it does work).

dont get me wrong...the atkins diet works great

it just bugs the hell out of me when i see so many people convinced it is the anwser to everything, then giving into temptation and cheating at the first chance you get

its not like a regular starving yourself diet where 'cheating' once in a while isent that big of a deal.....that one sugary soda and bowl of pasta prety much destroys weeks of work adjusting your metabolism and bloodsugar

i think part of it goes back to pre-civilized man, the same uncivilized man whose digestive system we still have...before man settled into farms, his diet consisted almost entirely of meats and vegitables...grains and carbs dident exist for early man....so our digestive system and entire body is tuned for high protien complex fatty foods....think about it, primitave african villages and eskimos that still eat 'traditional' wild hunted food and pick wild plants, things like cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol....are entirely non existant, they truely are the healthiest people on the planet, and IMHO a lot of that is diet

anyway...thats a whole other rant along with the behavior problems associated with overeating

I'm skinny genetically. Instead of dishing out $3 for a bag of chips, i'd rather get a pound of bacon, fry it up, and eat it all in one sitting.
Cholestrol was off the scale but I walk a lot, about 2-3 miles everyday. Maybe all the oil goes straight to my skin.

I think what we eat and all the chemicals are affecting our genes, and we are "evolving" (mutating for the worst.) I always see old pictures of women in the US with big boobs, like 1940 WWII pictures. Now it's all about mosquito bites and using implants. I remember a recent news article about how they were shocked at how much chemicals are in our bodies.

Women are now more physical and they work out and this is why they are not as round. Plus skinny has been in, small waists, hips and big fake boobs. Even the 20 year old of today are a lot different then the 20 years old from twenty years ago. They are in better shape but maybe to a little to thin. Nothing wrong with having a little meat on your bones.

I agree completely. On Atkins, I eat fish, veggies, salads, eggs, bacon, steak, ...etc. All you really have to do is lay off the sugar. I normally tell people that if man kind put it through a machine, its probably not good for you.

BrianS
01-24-2004, 10:01 PM
lay off the sugar is the best thing you can do

basically i try do do everything in moderation, i never eat when im not hungry or at 'inapproporiate' times (studying..watching TV...whatever) and avoid sugar, i ESPICALLY never eat sugary things with other food (soda with dinner is horrible for your blood sugar and metabolism)

i get enough junk calories in the form of beer and alcholic drinks

*edit

as far as evolving, we arent...yet...humans havent evolved a single bit since before we were civilized...that means our DNA is unchanged since before egyption times

honestly i am not sure that humans will evolve because of our 'civilized' and technology based lifestyles

dude. my friend's mom was on Atkins. the diet sucks mostly more than it does good. Once you get off, you gain so much weight. I say f*** it and just work out and eat less and more healthier. Yeah, sounds pretty good. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If you do it right, you never go off. You are supposed to go into maintenance.

If you do it right, it's SUPER hard...i tried it about 5 years ago. If you cheat on the atkins diet, you completely screw yourself...because you aren't supposed to have ALOT of protein AND carbs.

I just say, pick one thing, the one thing that is the main source of your caloric intake, and quit that.

I strayed for about six months. I gained back about 20 pounds. (I had lost 55). My problem was that after loosing 55 pounds, I also lost my motivation to loose weight. When I slid back up the scale, it motivated me again. Hopefully this time, I will stay on course. I've relost about 10 pounds so far (2 weeks). I still have about 50 to go to meet my original goal. The thing that is difficult for me is that I talk myself into cheating. I start out with a little extra cream in my coffee. Then I say well a little ketchup won't hurt. Well since I'm eating ketchup, a few fries won't bother anyone. Man, I haven't had any chips in a long time, or a doughnut. And so on, and so on.

I'd be the first to admit that its not easy unless you do it exactly. Its so easy to stray once you get started. What helps me to stay clean is all of the new stuff thats out. The new russell stover candy is really good. The atkins bars are good. After a few weeks, I get out of the habit of eating sweets. Then I don't need them anymore. I guess it must be like quiting smoking.
