If we were gambling folk around here, we would have bet cash money our readers would name the BMW 3 Series as America's Best Coupe.

We would have lost.

When Infiniti launched the G35 more than a year ago, the company made no bones about targeting the venerable 3 Series, a perennial America's Best winner. Experience behind the wheel of the G35, both on the road and at the track, reveals a wonderfully balanced sports coupe.

The G35 shows the true benefits a company can earn from platform sharing. Though the Infiniti's underpinnings are pure Nissan 350Z, there is a visual difference-its stunning design some prefer over the Z-and a performance difference as well. Both cars are solid, but the G35 knocks the Z's raw edges off and makes the driving experience more one of sporting elegance.

While it's nothing new for automakers to take aim at BMW, few reach that mark. But readers say the G35 is on target.

FINISH LINE

SECOND: BMW 6 Series
THIRD: BMW 3 Series
