If you've looked in the general forum, you may have noticed that im restoring a 78 fairlady Z. The original engine was swapped in favor of the 2.8L w/ triple webbers. Carburation was later swapped with fuel injection when we brought the car into the stated for emissions reasons.

Now that we are restoring the engine, we are were planning on putting triple webbers back in. However, we are also considering dropping in the skyline's RB26DETT. Through a friend who races GT3, we can get a decent price on a good condition RB26DETT. My concern then is the cost and complexity of swapping it into the car.

What exactly most be done to accomadate the swap? I am doubting it will bolt right up to the original 5 speed. What most be modified for the tranny to work with this engine? I'm also assuming custom engine mounts is a given.

I have seen the 300zx engine put into a 280, as well as chevy 350's. I also believe i saw a pic of a rb26dett powered Z, so i am positive the engine will fit.

I guess my main concern is the cost and complexity of getting the existing 5 spd to work with the new engine. what has to be done to make this work?

Thanks for any help you can give!

The only people in the U.S. that I know of who have even considered transplanting an RB26DETT engine into a car here, are the guys at McKinney Motorsports in Santee, CA.

It's a small family run shop that has transplanted a KA24DE into a Datsun 510, an SR20DET into a 240SX.

Their future plans are to drop another SR20DET into that 510, and an RB26DETT into that 240SX.

I don't know if they can help you with an old Z, but here is their web address: http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/McKinneyMotorsports/

just wanted to let you know i ALREADY got a response from mckinney.

heres what they had to say:
Avengr: Yes---it will fit you must use the rear wheel drive only trans, oil
pan and computer system from the same car. The swap will produce a very fast
car!!! The 280Z motor built and turbo'd will also produce a fast car. The
RB26 with a single T66 or T88 is a good choice. There is several Japanese
book on the Skyline that show all the options that are availbile. We have
look at this swap but have not found a customer interested in doing one yet.
The swap looks to be fairly straight forward with minimal fabrication. If
you need help or more info call us at 619 449-4748 ask for Mack. Just for
my info how much can you get the RB26 for ???? WE should be able to get
wiring computer and trans from Japan if you need.

Looks like we may have opened up a new option!

woohooo!
