Here is a convo I had with a guy, we basically argued but its one of those import vs. domestic things, check it out:

MUSCLE MAN: that [censored] car?
dltah: yep
MUSCLE MAN: [censored] cars are for gays
dltah: what do you suggest I get
MUSCLE MAN: muscle car
dltah: I want a car that can handle
MUSCLE MAN: classic mustang with mustang II suspension
MUSCLE MAN: that'd rock your socks
dltah: does that have a solid rear axle? whats the curb weight on it? what is the weight balance?
MUSCLE MAN: yes
MUSCLE MAN: around 3000 ibs
MUSCLE MAN: i dont know the last one
MUSCLE MAN: but of all classic cars that handle mustangs with mustang II suspensions rules
MUSCLE MAN: but you'd have to install it yourself
MUSCLE MAN: or pay for it
dltah: rear axle isn't for me, it allows masss chassis and torque flex as well as the inability to contour the rear syspension to keep a constant tread patch - less tread patch/uneven/unconsistant tread patch = fly off the road bye bye
dltah: 3000 isnt too bad
MUSCLE MAN: i dont knnow suspension
MUSCLE MAN: i know engines
dltah: i see
MUSCLE MAN: and american muscle is everything when it comes to engines
dltah: i see

MUSCLE MAN: american muscle is so insane it makes me cry
MUSCLE MAN: i dont buy cars were i nedd 10k in cash to break 13's
dltah: i like that 2600hp quadturbo v8 that guy said
dltah: if i wanted a drag car, i would get american
dltah: however, i focus on lap times
MUSCLE MAN: i like going fast in a straight line
MUSCLE MAN: i own a 1968 mercury cougar xr-7 390 4V
dltah: yeah it's fun
dltah: this guy is putting a 497 in his 240sx
dltah: hahahah
MUSCLE MAN: you like laps?
dltah: yeah, I enjoy developing driver skill
MUSCLE MAN: i got driver skill in my cougar
MUSCLE MAN: but only because I can take turns at 50 and not worry about my car tipping
dltah: how does that elicit skill?
MUSCLE MAN: when it's 3500 pounds you dont usually worry about such things
MUSCLE MAN: because i rule

dltah: the fast and furious movies definately have been devastating the image of imports, as well as the majority of non-serious import tuners in general.. I've never seen a muscle man that wasn't serious about tuning his car - I think that is one of the main reasons why imports get hated on so much

MUSCLE MAN: this summer im stroking it out to a 410
MUSCLE MAN: im gonna home port and polish my heads
MUSCLE MAN: and hopefully get headers
MUSCLE MAN: and intake
MUSCLE MAN: stroker kits are god
MUSCLE MAN: they dont make one for a 390
dltah: intake? isnt your car carburated
MUSCLE MAN: i have to have the pistons specially made
MUSCLE MAN: intake manifold
MUSCLE MAN: sorry
dltah: ah
MUSCLE MAN: edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold
MUSCLE MAN: hopefully ill get somewhere cloase to 600 hp out of that
MUSCLE MAN: probably more like 400
MUSCLE MAN: *500
dltah: is this going to be your daily driver?
MUSCLE MAN: right now its at 365
MUSCLE MAN: yep
dltah: how is the gas milage going to be at 600hp
MUSCLE MAN: but if i get a decent job
MUSCLE MAN: im gonna hook it up with a 427 side oiler
dltah: why dont you put a 497 in it and call it a day
MUSCLE MAN: and port the heads, a rebuild, intake, and put my demon carb on it
MUSCLE MAN: and leave it at that
MUSCLE MAN: heh
MUSCLE MAN: right now it's running 11 mpg
dltah: dear god.
MUSCLE MAN: msd and headers improve gas mileage
MUSCLE MAN: so around 6 mpg
MUSCLE MAN: on sucky ass 91 octance californian puke
MUSCLE MAN: well

it's been some time for me, and i never really was a ford guy, but i'm fairly sure that there is a pretty good selection of pistons for a 390.

Most "good old school" glasspacks were louvered cores...which cause all kinds of turbulence and back pressure which isn't really wanted since the velocity of the exhaust is whats most important.

2 barrel exhaust eh? wow.

Next summer he's stroking it to 410 (not much of a stroking on a 390) yet there is no stroker kit made for it? This guy doesn't seem smart enough to figure out how to stroke an engine without a kit.

After some googling it seems that he was at least partly right about the 390 pistons, they arent exactly off the shelf but they also aren't all that uncommon and most likely all the major piston manufacturers have the specs to make them.

Oh, and his little mod list will never get him to 600whp.

Also, his stock engine has either 270 or 320hp, so unless its allready heavily modified its unlikely he has 365hp, especially not at the wheels.

A LOT of people went bezerk when Hot Rod had a shootout with a STi and a Cobra.
I had to point out that NAISC (whatever it's called) had far more respect for the Cobra than they did for the STi.
