In Japan, the SR20DE is used in many cars. I noticed that in one of their cars this particular engine has 165ps whereas in the Sentra SE it has 145ps. The SR20DE here must be detuned or something. But wouldnt it have been wiser to give the Sentra SE 165ps to really compete with the Civic SI? the SE still would not threaten the SE-R if its true that the R will have 190ps!

Couple of things...
1) The 165ps SR20DE you are refering to is the FR configuration for the S14 and S15.
2) The FF configuration SR20DE is rated at 150ps
3) The fuel available in Japan is higher octane, meaning higher compression ratio for slightly more power.
4) PS to Hp makes the 165 more like 162 and 150 more like 147. That's pretty close to the US's 145. 2hp is difference between midnight and hot summer noon.

its a SR16VE or a tuned for torque SR20VE, its a real screamer, but nothing like a good ole technology of the SR20DET.

Is SR20DE the engine in Infiniti G20?

The only reason, why Nissan hasn't tried to bring those Japan spec. engines, that I can come up with is that those are high hp - low torque engines. With Nissan's old management, they never thought that those engines would work in the US... by the way in Japan, Nissan has a 1.6L engine that pumps out around 180hp, and a 1.8L engine that wrings out over 190hp... all naturally aspirated... so if they really wanted to they can just bring these engines over here... but they are also high hp - low torque engines...

The G20, all the SE-Rs, the 98 and newer Sentra SEs, and the NX 2000...

Doc... Nissan has NO 1.8L SR18VE motor, they have a SR16VE and SR20VE. The highest output version of the SR series of NA engines is the SR16VE N1 Spec II, which pushes 197HP or 200PS. Nissan has a N1 version of the SR20VE engine but its only for racing, it pushes 260PS out of a 2.0L engine, they use that in their endurance races, its not a street engine. But could be streetable. Reason Nissan has no plans for any SR20VE or 16VE is cause they are going to phase out the SR series of motors very soon. They are going to a new motor, called TR. Its all alloy DOHC 16V with balance shafts and timing chain. It will apear in the 02 SE-R in a form of 2.5L will push 180+HP and use no variable valve timing, but will include a coil over plug ignition system. I step forward from the already-advanced HEI system the current SR20 uses. All G20s, All SE-R models and all Sentra SEs and NX2Ks used the SR20DE engine, in diff trims, BEST of all of em is the 91-93 for the NX and SE-R, and 91-93.5 G20, those egines made more power and are alot eassier to modiffy than the newer engines. Even thou Nissan quotes 140HP for all engines but the new 145, the older engines put down more HP at the wheels on the dyno than the new 145HP engine. So figure it out, older SE-Rs have about 160HP- and includes my 93 SE-R, last of the good ones.

There is a 1.8L engine... it's just not a SR series... and it does push close to 180 hp... http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/grin.gif

Sounds like the defunct CA18DET...

its a old CA18DET, there is a SR18DE but its only 130HP, it lives in the shadow of the SR20. There is no VE version of that engine. CA has been out of production since about 1990. It was a fine motor but the motor it repelaced FJ20DET was a better motor still. SR20DET was and is supperior to all the Nissan 4 bangers. We'll see how good the TR25DE in the SE-R will be, or if they do make a TR25DET then that will definitaly be a screamer.

I'm not certain, but isn't that state-side CA-series engine you're all refering to, the CA18E-T?
I don't think it was DOHC. I could be wrong though...

Its a CA18ET, used in the S12 200SX sold in the US in the 80s. It was sold in Japan as Silvia Gazzelle. It pushed around 145HP stock, its not really the same engine as the CA18DET. There is also a CA20E, engines used in the S12 200SX where CA20E, CA18ET and VG30E. The last 2 gave the 200SX fast acceleration than any of the Domestic pony cars of its vintage, its really dumb why Nissan didn't hop on the Domestic Pony car battle and really show em what is up with the S15.. I would be willing to bet that U would see a VERRY big change in the current import racing scene, no Honduhhs but Silvias !! Then again those little kids dunno how to drive a real RWD car. Snow comes they would take out the 1st tree on their block.

Huh? http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/confused.gif What are you talking about? I don't think any one in their sane mind would compare a S15 to a purpose built/modified Drag car... http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/confused.gif
Hope you don't mind if I ask: Are you a poser from a Honduh list? http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/confused.gif
Yes the Silvia's are built for racing, not just straight line, but the curvy stuff. Most people in the US don't know how to drive a RWD car anymore. Everyone is so afraid of oversteer it's rediculous. (Thanks Ralph!!!)

majority of the import scene is in southern cali. not much snow there. import racers elsewhere, like here in louisiana, are mostly just posers.
