I want my father to get a G coupe as his next car(He currently owns an 01 eclipse GT) but he is fixated on the RX8, he would have to get an auto because of my mother, which in the RX8 actually has less hp then the eclipse 198 - 200. Anyways, I would realy apreciate it if you would post any issues you find with the RX8,any Reliability issues, safety issues, etc. personally or things you've found from other places, the more factual they are, likeacctual recals or something the better. Thanks in advance.

I have a friend who is fixated on the RX-8, too. Apparently the zoom zoom commerials and the 'unique style' 'exclusive rotary club' slogan is getting to some crowd. At first I tried to save his soul, but then after awhile I started to encourage him to get the RX-8. Why not? Get the RX-8, I'd smoke him on the straights, road courses, freeways, with or without passengers, and still get better quality / service / gas milage. It won't really help him, but it'd give me plenty of entertainment making fun of his Pikachu car.
RX-8 problems? What problems?
a) Service - sucks, plain and simple. It's Mazda USA~
b) Reliability - typical Mazda reliability - no go
c) rotary engine - unique, so unique I wonder how many technicians really knows how to repair it. The last commercial rotary engine was sold almost 10 yrs ago.
d) gas milage - not a big deal until you realize you are paying SUV gas milage for 4 cylinder torque.
e) no torque - again, not a big deal until you start wondering what you would do when you have 4 people in the car and you try to merge into traffic.
f) engine flooding - havn't heard of this happening since the 70's. Apparently taking short trips is a big no no in the RX... you'd be paying to get your car towed to the dealership for "non-warranteed" service.
g) Resale: bleh~ how good can it be when brand new ones are going for $4k off MSRP on weekly papers all over the country.
h) $30k for a Mazda? What?
i) Looks like a rice car, altezza tail lights, aggressive and young styling, smily face resembling a mean pikachu.
The plus side though:
1) Zoom zoom, the heart of the sport car.
2) It's fun to drive.
3) You'll be DIFFERENT! UNIQUE!
4) 4 doors, and still looks like a coupe.
5) Handles very good because it's lightweight.

Get your father to test drive the G35, he'll see for the money it would be wise of him to buy that instead of the RX-8. Tell you father how Infiniti is in the top 2 when it comes to customer service. Their cars are reliable.

I don't really understand what his dad is doing driving around a Eclipse. Doesn't this guy need a sedan since he has a family to drive around?Look here is better advice, get yourself a used 2002/2003 Q for the same price as a G35/RX-8. Your dad would be a very kool guy with it

I'd let him get what he wants.

I'd agree with that. I mean, he's driving an Eclipse. Whatever faults there are with the RX-8, it's still a step up. And if he ends up not liking the car, that's why we call it "mid-life crisis". Ultimately it's his money. He buys it, it's his toy, why should he settle when he clearly wants the RX-8?

He does regret buying the eclipse, but there's nothing he can do about it untill he's ready to get a new car. Since My mothers car was alot older 97 Rav-4 with over 205,000 miles on it http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif she got the new car first, she got a Mazda Tribute but would have gotten the FX if she could afford it, she desperately needed a new car quickly that she could afford, since the Tribute is the sportiest of the Mini utes I encouraged her to get that, the reason why my father should be able to afford a car soon is because he has been working on starting a multi million dollar company for the past 2 years and although there were numerous problems along the way it's getting close to launching off the ground, once my father gets the buisness going my mother said she'll trade in the Tribby for an FX, but my dad is gonna be the next to get the new car. He said that his freind, who had an RX7(last gen) loved it, his freinds only problem was that it got stollen twice. so thats 1 strike against my persuasion process http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Lot's of Mazda haters on this board...
RX-8 and RX-7 are definetly different cars. RX-7 had super car like handling while the RX8 has excellent handling for a 2+2.
Test drove a RX8 and it's nowhere near as good as the RX-7 but it's definetly a better handler then the G35 sedan(that's the only G I've driven). G35 has alot of torque downlow and would probably be more pleasant to drive daily in a congested area for most people.
Driving an RX-8 is like driving an S2000 you have to like rev the car to extract perfomance. RX-8 got some pretty decent room. You can fit 6 ft person in the front and back at same time and it will be fine.
I've never had a problem with my 1993 RX-7 but it only has 45k on it. Biggest worry I have had was replacing the brake pads.
Just depends what your dad wants.... RX8 is more of a driver's, and fun to drive car. While the G35 is more practical but sporty(but not as sporty as the RX8).
I really don't think he can make a bad choice between the two.

the engine flooding problem was an issue with the carburators, not necessarily related to it being a rotary engine
fuel injection prevents that
