View Full Version : 99 Altima Acceleration Problems

Problem has been ongoing for a month now. At the beginning, when I went to accelerate the car, it squealed for a bit then stoped. Now the squeal is getting longer and won't stop unless you take your foot off of the gas. I'm not talking about hard acceleration, just normal driving conditions.

I can only compare the squealing noise to that of a bad fan belt. If you have any idea what I'm talking about, please help me figure it out.

Thanks

my truck has a similar problem, but i think i've figured out what it is. in my case, it's the AC that needs to be serviced. my truck squeals only when driving with the AC on. but your car's a 99 so the AC should be okay...

Kaiser, I had to fix my brother's 626 with this problem a while back. If it only does it with the A/C on, then your A/C compressor belt probably needs tightening. If it sounds the same even with the A/C off, it's probably the alternator/ps belt. In either case, check the belt's condition because if you let it go too long, the belt might have started glazing and would need to be replaced.

Definitely sounds like an accessory belt problem. Like Nismo suggested check to see if its the belt that drives the AC compressor by turning the AC on and blipping the throttle. You can check for the power steering belt by turning the steering wheel in one direction till it stops (this puts the power steering pump under the most load) and blipping the throttle.

But the way you describe it I would say if your ac is off and it squeals and you are not turning, the alternator belt is the likely suspect.

I haven't worked on the newer gen Altimas, they haven't gone to a single serpentine belt yet have they? Because that would change everything.

Hope this helps.

I had this same problem with a Plymouth Sundance (Shadow) in the past. It turned out that one of the bolts that held the alternator in place had fallen out, and so the alternator was no longer rigidly attached to the car, thus the squealing under load-- for my problem specifically, if I accelerated very slowly I could avoid it; also, once the squeal started I could keep it going as long as I had any pressure on the gas. Anyway, a new bolt fixed the problem (a few bucks to install) and I think I replaced the belt too.
