nissan patrol-fuel hungry!!

i own an 1984, 2.8L, petrol,swb nissan patrol that chews up fuel at a rate of 16mpg.
is there neway i can improve my fuel economy???

Was it always this way or is this more recent?

If more recent, check the tire pressure to make sure they are the psi that Nissan recommends. The psi can vary from front and rear. Usually it's underneath the arm rest on on the center console

How many miles do you have on the car and have consistently changed the oil and various filters?

just purchased the car 2nd hand.
has bout 280 000 km on it
pressure is alright.
