J.D. Power and Associates Reports:

Toyota Motor Sales Captures Top Corporate Ranking in Vehicle Dependability
While Toyota and Honda Continue to Dominate, the Big Three Domestics Make
Important Strides in Long-Term Quality Improvement

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- With seven models topping their vehicle segments and Lexus ranking highest among nameplates, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. captures the top corporate ranking in the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) released today.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030603/JDLOGO )

The success of Toyota Motor Sales is further evidenced in the improvements of two of its segment-leading models. The Toyota Corolla, which consistently performs well in the highly competitive compact car segment, improves an impressive 30 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) from 2003. The Toyota MR2 Spyder also makes significant improvements, recording 20 fewer problem incidences per 100 vehicles in the sporty car segment.

The Big Three Domestic manufacturers all record improvements in their corporate performances in the study over 2003. General Motors, which improves 2 PP100, remains the only Domestic manufacturer ranking above the industry average. However, Ford Motor Company and DaimlerChrysler make significant headway, improving 12 and 9 PP100, respectively. The most improved Domestic nameplates include Ford (improving 19 PP100), Lincoln (18), Mercury (16), Dodge (14), Cadillac (13), Plymouth (13), Chevrolet (10) and Chrysler (10).

"The Domestics are putting their money where their mouths are in terms of consistent long-term quality improvement," said Joe Ivers, partner and executive director of quality/customer satisfaction at J.D. Power and Associates. "However, while the Domestics continue to outpace the Europeans in long-term quality, the Japanese continue to dominate."

Segment-leading models highlighting the Domestic quality improvements include the Chrysler Concorde and the Ford Ranger, each improving by more than 20 percent in their segment, and the redesigned GMC Sierra HD in the heavy- duty full-size pickup segment, which improves by more than 30 percent over its predecessor.

At the nameplate level, Lexus ranks highest for the 10th consecutive year. Lexus is followed in the rankings by Buick, Infiniti, Lincoln and Cadillac, respectively. The most improved brands over 2003 are Kia (77 PP100 improvement), Suzuki (38) and Audi (23), although all three continue to perform below the industry average.

The Vehicle Dependability Study measures problem symptoms of 3-year-old vehicles, primarily in categories representing malfunctions; noise, vibration and harshness; driveability; dependability; and safety. The VDS is one of three J.D. Power and Associates quality metrics, along with the Initial Quality Study (IQS), which measures quality after 90 days of ownership, and the Automotive, Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, which measures customer perceptions on the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles. The 2004 IQS was released in April, and the 2004 APEAL Study is scheduled to be released in late September.

"The metrics measured in VDS, IQS and APEAL represent a kind of 'triple crown' of vehicle performance, which are all essential in providing a complete picture of the ownership experience," said Ivers. "Maintaining very high levels of quality off the assembly line as well as three years later, while also appealing to consumers in terms of design, is no small feat. Among the 2001 model-year vehicles included in the rankings for the 2004 VDS, 2001 IQS and 2001 APEAL studies, only the Toyota Avalon, Lexus ES 300 and Lexus LS 430 have ranked highest in their segments across all three studies."

The 2004 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 48,000 original owners of 2001 model-year cars and light trucks.

Did anyone else notice that the Altima rated higher than the Camry and Accord?

Holy shiznit! Nissan is below the industry average. Monsieur Ghosn, ce n'est pas bon!

I see that the Altima is among the top-three rated cars in the category for "Entry Midsize Car." I guess that's good, but I'm skeptical of that data, as I see that the Malibu and Grand Am are also rated higher than both the Camry and the Accord. I'd be much less incredulous if I saw the Cam and Acc included with the Alt in that category. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Nissan behind Ford, and GM. That sucks.

It's so funny because GM really does put out good products but their perception of quality by people is obviously so much lower. What do them in for me are their cheap looking interiors. It just drives me crazy. The perfect example is the up coming Pontica G6 - beautiful car on the outside, but he interior is absolutely hideous.

I can't figure out why I'd like to work for JD Power. Since the days of Integras winning awards are long gone, fewer and fewer of the winners make sense.

Then again, these are consumer surveys. If Malibu owners all love 'em, then it shows up in the surveys.

JD to GM: Don't change a thing!
GM: Yes Sir!

Other than the heretics like myself, a couple of aunts, and a few cousins, my family is GM faithful. So from experience I can confirm that GM products ain't all that bad. Compared to Toy-Nis-Hon products, GM products are less refined overall, but mechanical integrity is not lacking from those cars. For just one example: my mom has a Grand Am (which she is trading soon for a BMW 540). She has had the car for 7 years, and there are 200,000 miles logged on the odometer. I criticize GM a lot ( and rightfully so I think- http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ), but I must admit that other than a busted water pump at about 140,000 miles, that Grand Am has gone, and gone, and gone--without any other-than-routine-maintenance problems.

I'd say that GM definitely has the basic mechanics down pat. But to me, the major Japanese manufacturers are more attentive to the details (especially the interior details), so much so that I can't even imagine myself buying a car by GM before I'd buy a car by Toyota, Nissan, or Honda. I'd definitely test drive a Corvette though. And I really like the Equinox (better than even the RAV-4 or CRV).

EDIT: I meant 530, not 540.

You forgot the biggest difference between Detroit and others: innovation. Without innovation I expect Detroit Auto makers to succeed in terms of initial quality and refinement. A perfect example is Buick.

Exactly. After years of producing a Fox-platform Mustang, you'd think Ford would have figured it out, but nooooo, 'refinement' and 'Mustang' seem to be exclusive.

Buicks are Chevrolets with padding inside and out with better build quality. It's amazing what a little money can do. Buicks may not be exciting, but they're not "bad" cars. Maybe in the 1980s, but not now.

For all the people crowing about Altima's ranking and Nissan scores overall, lets keep in mind that these are Long-Term Dependability numbers, so these are cars from 3-4 years ago. Essentially, the Altima is the last gen Altima.

For all of these numbers, I don't believe Carlos Ghosn's has had any effect yet, so let's not get on his ass about this. However, considering the fall in quality of Nissan products during Ghosn's reign and that Nissan NA still scored below the industry average, it doesn't bode well for the next few years of Nissan's standing in JD Power.
