Contrary to earlier denials, General Motors is to drop its Daewoo brand in Europe, according to Reuters. Daewoo models will instead be sold under the Chevrolet brand, as of 2005. However, the Daewoo name will remain in South Korea, where it is an established trademark. A number of Daewoo vehicles are already branded as Chevrolets; the Kalos is known as the Chevvy Aveo in the US and South Africa (and Suzuki Swift+ in Canada), and the Lacetti and Nubira are sold as Chevrolets in China, South Africa and India and as the Suzuki Forenza in the States. GM is said to be planning to "build Chevrolet into a worldwide brand", and other vehicles from within the 'family' will also join the Chevrolet line-up, such as the Opel/Vauxhall Meriva and the Russian-built Niva 4x4. A formal announcement is expected at the Paris Motor Show next month.
