Chrysler's Jeep division has confirmed that it will double its line-up by the end of 2006, with three all-new 4x4s on the way. First to come will be the Commander, a seven-seat crossover-style luxury model based on the Grand Cherokee platform (see our Spy Shots story), then a four-door version of the Wrangler, and then an all-new entry-level model derived from the Compass concept shown in Detroit in 2002, and built on the Neon saloon platform. Heavily-revised two-door Wranglers are also scheduled. Chrysler intends these new models to widen the appeal of the Jeep brand and to win back much of the ground it has lost to rivals in recent years. Chrysler is also said to be planning petrol-electric and diesel-electric hybrid versions of many of its models, with 100 diesel-electric Dodge Ram pick-ups going onto company fleets later this year.
