I visited a dealership yesterday to sit in the M and to get a look at the option and color configurations they've got in their delivery queue. So far, I have contacted four local dealerships with my desired options (M45 Sport, black with basically any interior except wheat, journey, tech, MES, and aero) and none have said, "We've got that!"
The one option I'm beginning to consider dropping in order to make my criteria less strict would be the mobile entertainment system. Reason for this is that I don't think it is exactly what I'd want it to be.
Can anyone who has actually seen a car equipped with MES answer these questions for me:
First, if you get the MES option, are an additional power outlet and AV inputs added to the trunk? The reason I ask is that I am most interested in MES for mobile video gaming for rear passengers. The ideal configuration, in my opinion, for this would be to have the Gamecube strapped or velcro'ed into place in the trunk right behind the "ski-passthrough," allowing you to flip the arm-rest down and access the power switch and change game discs. Hook up two Wavebird controllers and you're set. When not gaming, just turn off the Gamecube and stow the armrest. Everything would be hidden and clean. This, of course, is assuming there's power and AV inputs back there.
If the only useful AV inputs and power are in the flip-down panel integrated into the back of the front armrest, then you'll either have a fairly ugly and intrusive permanent installation or be in for a few minutes of prep work wiring-up everything each time.
Second, is it possible for the audio channels of whatever's connected to the back inputs to be played over the car's sound system? I know that for safety reasons, the video won't be shown on the front monitor, but I would want the option of playing the game audio over the sound system rather than having to resort to using the supplied wireless headphones. I'm guessing that it may be possible since the video is known to be visible on the front monitor when the emergency brake is engaged.
I'd really like the MES if it can do these two things. If not, I won't be all that heartbroken to drop it from my desired configuration.
Thanks!
