I'm going to be buying a new vehicle by the end of June and the two choices I've narrowed it down to are the 05 Impreza WRX or the 05 Xterra S 4x4.

I've test driven both a couple times. Both are awesome. I prefer the interior controls, engine, and ride of the Xterra, but I like the lower stance, AWD, and the fuel mileage of the WRX. (I'm not a fan of truck/SUV ride height) The big sticking point is that according to the dealer, the 6-speed manual versions of the Xterra aren't available yet. This is kind of a mandatory thing for me, because I will not drive an automatic.

Is there any ETA on the 6-speed or was the dealer just spouting bs? I haven't been able to confirm or deny that 6-speed Xterras aren't available, but I haven't been able to locate one either.

Thanks!

Not to sway you away from Nissan, BUT if you are not a fan of SUV/Height.. then why are you looking at an SUV (Xterra)?

Just curious... http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Where do you live? I'm in Sacramento, and I've searched the inventories of all the Nissan dealers within 50 miles of my house and none of them seem to have 6MT Xterras. Future Nissan in Roseville was the only one to even say they won't be built for awhile.

as for why I'm considering the Xterra if I'm not a fan of truck ride height - lack of options. There just aren't a lot of wagons or hatchbacks with a serious 4WD/AWD system without entering a much higher price class or compromising on something else. For me, the hatch/wagon style and the 4WD/AWD are two big must haves. Since I used to drive a Pathfinder, the ride height was something I could compromise on.

Thanks. It's good to know they're out there. I'll keep an eye out for them b/c I'd really like to try one out before I decide on a vehicle.

They are out there, definitely. Check the Xterra owners club (http://www.xterraownersclub.com) , many there have 6 speed Xterras. Also, if you want VDC, you will have to wait because I do not think Nissan has released these combinations yet. An example of why you should wait, the Off Road trim comes standard with VDC, but currently the 6 speed versions do not have VDC on the truck because Nissan said late availability. So, if you buy an OR Xterra NOW with the manual tranny, you most likely will get a model WITHOUT VDC, yet you will pay for it. They do not offer discounts.. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The dealer should be able to look around your region for one and do a dealer trade.

I'm pretty sure u don't pay for it. But when it is available, then the package will increase in price...

I agree, if VDC is part of an option package, but with the OR trim, it's standard. I guess it's possible that they will increase the price of the manual trans OR trim to reflect the addition of VDC, but I haven't seen anything to confirm this.

I live in the area too and also are interested in a 6sp Xterra. Nissan in Elk Grove seems to have a good selection and they seem somewhat more eager to deal as a new dealership in town. Another place for good best prices in the area is Shingle Spring Nissan. You can get very good prices if you negotiate hard. Their sales staffs including the sales mngr are not very good though. If you want good long term relationship with a dealership then don't go there. But if you only care about prices, give them a shot. Just be sure to testdrive the car and inspect inside out completely before you sign or drive home.
