View Full Version : Twin Turbo Vs. Motor Swap?

My friend says that it will be cheaper, more reliable, and easier to tune if he was to swap out a skyline engine, skyline transmission and drivetrain than it would be to install an APS Twin Turbo (or any Twin Turbo kit) and to have forged internals installs for the 350Z.

This is assuming that he would be pulling out the 350Z motor and installing the new motor mounts, engine, transmission and drive train, and having someone else do the tuning.

I say the TT+internals is a much better safer route than motor swaping.

Any help on which is best is appreciated.

I find it hard to believe the motor swap would be cheaper unless he's getting free labor or doing it himself.

Rebuilding the motor with forged internals plus twin turbo will cost around $20k maybe less maybe more depending on labor etc. TT without rebuilding the motor is about half that or a little less. So, do you think you could do the Skyline engine+trans swap for $20k?

I aggree. The Skyline motor would be a waste of money.

Plus, you dont need internals. I know of severall TT'ed Z's that are running around on stock internals.

there are quite a few 350z with the TT kits on stock internals, and plus werent the VQs sort of designed to take in boost?

Kind of.

The oil sending unit is easily accessable and their is a screw in the block that you can unscrew (duh) and use it as a water feed for the turbo.

That really doesnt prove much other than they were thinking that people were going to turbo it.

It would be much cheaper to do the fully built turbo route IMO. A motor swap is a full custom job, custom mounts, custom front end, custom pedal assembly and throttle linkage.... There's a VERY long list of customized parts that are needed. Now, I'll admit, having an RB motor would really be more flexible with future mods, and higher power output, but then you are talking WAY more money....
