Hey guys -

One of our members PullingMaxG's did a turbonetics single turbo kit on an automatic G35 that was otherwise mainly stock.

Nothing wrong with an extra ~100 hp to the wheels. :)

Very nice.

From the torque curve it looks like it kicks in rather progressively and you don't really feel an increase until about 3000 rpm?

With an AT, you don't want to look too low in the rpm band as you have issues with the AT/torque converter, etc.

Yes / no. Equivalent torque levels are more dangerous to an auto transmission at higher rpm's than lower for the clutch packs. The Stillen SC (stage 3+) can put down that much torque on an auto transmission as low as 2000 rpm. That's not nearly as bad for it as it would be at 6000 rpm because of the heat generated at the clutch packs from slippage. The clutch packs are strong for low torque, they use the same ones in the Titan.

The low end torque with a higher stall speed TC will generate more heat in the fluid around until it engages. Factory stall on the 2005 G35 coupe is 3000 rpm which is relatively high. If we had a lower stall speed, more power would be put to the drive shaft more quickly. That might be good for longevity, but not for launches if you don't have good power at that point. Ours are set high for launch purposes.

But you're preaching to the choir anyway. I'm planning a full rebuild of my 5AT before I do any big power adders. ;)

Will,

I'm not too good at reading dyno charts (and I'm kinda blind so the small type escapes me sometimes) - what PSI was running for the test?

I wasn't really saying anything about torque capacity. I was just trying to say that when you dyno an auto, you can't really look down that far into the lower rpm range as you don't know if or how much they were feathering the gas so that it wouldn't kick down a gear. For most AT graphs, I don't really pay attention to anything below what the highest rpm is if they had the car WOT and it upshifts to the next gear (4th is the 1:1 in the AT IIRC). Put another way, if the tranny shifts from redline in 3rd to 4800 rpm into 4th, I wouldn't pay any attention to the info below 4900 or 5000 rpm.

With MT's, you don't have this issue because you can just floor it in any gear and it won't downshift.

Hope I've made sense.

I see what you're saying, I think my mind was just elsewhere. Though I haven't had an issue with a dyno on my 5AT. Since the manumatic only downshifts when its at a point that it can't support the gear for a given speed and would bog if it was a 6MT. Its pretty easy to dyno our cars since you can hold it in a given gear from a rolling start on the machine. So Claude's dyno should be indicative of the entire power band in a single gear (yep 4th is 1:1).

The engine itself might be making more power at lower rpm's than what is indicated on the dyno due to the 3k stall speed and lockup rates. But that torque band is what is transferred to the wheels and what you're going to feel pull you along. If the car downshifted, the torque curve would probably read higher or show a flutter.

Fellas,
MaxGs Here - - the Torbonetics is, how shall I label it, "the shizits" (as the young folks say). My Son actually picked the Coupe for me after AAM installed the Turbo. When my Son pulled up in my driveway, his first words were, "OMG, you're going to be scared to get on it!" Well, needless to say, I've goten on it since, and, I must confess, I'm cautious to go any further on the MPH scale!

Anyway, I love it...

All, OT, I'm hosting a Meet at my Hacienda, 19 Aug 06 - - open to all Coupes, FXs, and Zs. Prizes to the longest hauler, food and beverages provided, grab bags from Meguairs...will you be here?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Ciao,
Claude

That depends, is the invite open to random people you've never met before who could do smokey burnouts in your street and ogle your neighbor's teenage daughters? :26:

Plus we'll all want a ride!

No sweat, Sean. Some of the earlier auto G's manumatic functioned differently than they do now. They used to be a gear limiter only. If you had it in 4th and floored it going 10 mph, it would drop down one or more gears with 4th being the highest it would go.

Did he pick it up last Friday? If so, I was there -- nice ride!

AAM does some serious work - impressive facility and people.

Yep, he picked it up Friday!!! (It's BS with the Axis Milanos). You going to be able to join us for the 19 Aug Meet?

...ummmm Smokeys and ogling at my Neighbor's daughter - - did I mentioned that the Meet has been cancelled??? :) Joking, of course...

I hope at least 30 cars show up, because I ordered 30 Grab-Bbags from Meguairs!!!!:woohoorun:

It was a BS coupe, very tight install. I think you son was in shock you let him pick it up.

Wish I could make it but unfortunately I'm a 6+ hr drive away in NC, appreciate the invite though -- thanks!

If you don't want it to shift, you just knock the shifter to the right, get into the gear you want to dyno, and let it rip. Hope that made sense. That's how I dyno'd my N/A 2005 G35x.
