View Full Version : Sedans do not replace coupes!

I have read too many articles recently claiming that the Acura TSX "replaced" the Acura CL and that the Oldsmobile Aurora "replaced" the Cutlass Supreme coupe and convertible.

I'd agree with you. If the TSX reallly replaced the CL, its like saying the G35 replaced the G20. not, they're 2 different "types".
Would it matter if they had 2 fake doors though, like the rx8?

In my own world I like to think that the rx-8 didn't replace the rx-7, the FD was a hardcore 2 door, twin-turbo sports car, and it looked great. Fast forward to the rx-8 and we get an ugly, 4 door family sports car, that's slower than the rx-7, and has had overrated HP numbers ever since it was introduced. The only real sports car mazda has now is the MX-5

seems simple enough...is that opinion gonna change when the tsx coupe comes out though? The cl's of the past were accord derived and well the tsx is an euro-accord so if the tsx does become a coupe like they say is it that far off to say it does replace it? I'd guess you'd have to nic-pic and say well the cl was a v6 only car while the tsx is a 4cylinder car, so I guess it makes it a more appropriate rsx replacement more than anything else.
other news is that the next s2000 will be nothing like its current form, look for a 4 seater of a 2dr or rx8 type setup auto tranny option and a more luxurious image fitting design.
not to pick on you guys about it, but I think arguments like this are moot, especially when the names arent carried over clearly indicating that the car was not intended to replace but more appropriately fill in the gap from something that didnt work.
we'll be seeing this with the next 240 car and we even saw it with the 350Z.

Maroon Toronado rules them all.
I was tearing up leaving Ann Arbor today, but I think the Toronado I was following on Jackson Road was maroon. Whether or not it was a Trofeo ... again, I was tearing up because I am almost never near the UM campus anymore when classes were in session and I had to say farewell to my good buddy leaving the country next week.
Sedans can only succeed coupes in rare circumstances, i.e. the late-generation Grand Prix profile and character is sporting enough so that you may not notice the extra doors. The RX-8 did replace the RX-7 because Mazda is lame and both cars are sporty rotary-powered vehicles, similar in function if not in pure form (which does count a big deal in my book).

A MR car would be cool again. But I doubt it'll happen any time soon since they're focusing on the Zeta FR platform.

They are. Maybe. GM recently purchased the rights to the name. Fiero may be a go again. Maybe this time they'll put a V8 in it like they intended to before Dave Hill had one of his infamous hissy fits.

So what would they do? Take the Impala SS drivetrain and put it in the rear of a cobalt platform? Yuck. :(
Because its not a Fiero if its not MR. But I don't see any platforms that lend itself well to it right now.

Knowing the General, they'll probably try to rebadge the Solstice as the Fiero.
No, they'll be completely different. The Fiero will have a Fiero badge, which will differentiate it from the Solstice. Oh, and we'll do some retarded option package to help differentiate it even more such as Keyless entry only being available with manual windows. And you'll only be able to get an automatic with the more powerful engine.
*******s, I'm still angry at them for never offering a Grand Am GT 5MT when I was 16. I wasn't Italian enough to own a Trans Am, and we didn't live in a trailer park so the Z28 was out. Of course, we weren't living in Bloomfield so the M3 was out too. I was stupid as a teenager.
Anyhoo, the speculation is a lengthened kappa platform. Or they may do a subcompact pontiac on the new gamma platform. I hope they don't use it for the Solstice Coupe. It should just be the coupe version, not a totally different name. **** like that drives my OCD crazy.
edit: Forgot to mention that the Fiero beat out the Corvette in 1984 for Indy 500 Pace Car honors. Vette had to wait til 1986 when they released the Convertible.

The sedanist conspiracy continues in this thread... the title should be "Sedans do not replace coupes!" Obviously some insidious force is at work here, the same one that brought out a Pontiac roadster NOT called Fiero, even though it was not MR in format.
The bottom line: I messed up on the thread title. Too-shay.
"I don't think you're saying that right." Ah, too-sháy!

I hate to make a statement like this without reference to the actual article(s) that I got the information from, but here goes anway: The RX-8 was NOT supposed to be a replacement for the RX-7, nor was it supposed to be its successor. I used to read Road & Track, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend religiously, and I read a few articles when the RX-8 was still a concept and not yet for sale, where a spokesman for mazda was quoted saying something like this: "The mazda RX-8 is not the successor to the RX-7, rather, it's a "sporty" car designed with fun and economy in mind, not pure performance as the RX-7 was."
He stated this clear-as-day, and I'm sure that if you looked thru enough issues of these magazines, you'd eventually find the articles I'm talking about. I just wanted to clear this up, becuase in Mazda's defense, they didn't crap out on the "next generation RX-7", as there is still yet to be a "next generation RX-7".

I have that issue and yeah..that was an awesome article. very good history on the making of the wankel motor.
the RX does not designate it the track-worthy car it was with the RX7 lineage.. the rx4 came as a coupe, sedan and stationwagon. In fact, the earlier RX's were created as a "GT" car. not GT as in GT300, but GT as in comforting, long distance drivers favoring comfort over handling.
from wikipedia:
Later Cosmos competed in the ultra-high luxury performance market in Japan with the final JC Cosmo (1990-1995) sold as the Eunos Cosmo - Eunos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunos) was a luxury sales channel similar to Toyota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota)'s Lexus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexus) brand.
if anything, the rx8 is more inline with its roots...more cosmo-ish.(think sc300, not supra)

Oh? But maybe, just maybe, the Mazda of Cosmos and RX-7s is over, and the new Mazda of sedans and CUVs and a hippie "sports car" is the phoenix from the ashes.
Nissan and Toyota are working on great new supercars? Where is Mazda? Exactly.

What? Are you serious? Now you're just being hardheaded. RX-8 is NOT the successor to the RX-7, it was not ever meant to be. Mazda representatives have said so themselves, what more do you want? I agree that IF (big "if" here) the RX-8 was the successor to the RX-7, it would be a sad, sad attempt of filling the shoes that the RX-7 left behind, but simply stating that the "RX-8 is the successor RX-7 becuase I say so" isn't getting you anywhere. If you would like to provide some evidence to support your theory, then by all means, please do so, but until then, your statement is nothing more than an opinion.

If mazda wants us to believe that the rx-8 isn't the successor to the rx-7 then they shouldn't even give it an RX designation, seriously how is this not the successor?? both are the only mazda's to use the wankel rotary, and are RWD sports cars. If mazda was to bring a true rx-7 successor to market it would probably be higher performance and therefor higher priced than the current rx-8, so you've got the rx-7 above the rx-8 in the line-up, doesn't make much sense to me.
The one vice i've heard about rx-8 is that it handles great, but other than that I've heard it's marred by numerous problems, high oil consumption, untrue power ratings, cheap interior materials, and other annoyances. mazda should have just made the rx-8 a true rx-7 succesor, they have enough 4 door sporty cars in their lineup now (MS3, MS6) where it almost makes the rx-8's suicide doors irrelevant (I always thought they were unnecessary) come on mazda, give me something to be excited about.

The RX-8 should have been the 1986 model RX-7 and the current RX-8 should actually be the RX-10.......if mazda kept up with it's numbering scheme like they did with the RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, and RX-5s I have owned over the years.
Then we wouldn't have this problem.
