Don't know if any of you have seen this but it's kind of interesting. If you go to www.nissan.com (http://www.nissan.com) you get Nissan Computer Corp.
Nissan North America is suing this computer company for their domain name rights. Check out the whole story at http://www.ncchelp.org/

I'd say Nissan should fight to get its domain name back.
Ford owns their domain name, although there are millions of people with a last name Ford.
when i think nissan, i think cars not computers. i bet that theyve gotten a lotta hits from people mistaking them for nissan motor co. big corps. like that usually depend on having their name on their web url. smaller companies usually go by something more along the lines of nissancomputers.com for their sites. the only reason why i could think that nissan computers doesnt want to change is because theyre enjoying the extra web traffic. i think its time that nissan motors put an end to this hit robbery.

This is a thorny subject. My company has been on both sides of the domain name trademark issue.
Some news related to this is that American Honda is suing the guy who owns Honda.net to get their domain back.

the nissan one i believe to be justified. just look at the site. weak sauce content not even really realted to nissan computers. just web revenue banners. honda on the other hand, shoulnt get honda.net or honda-acura.net for that matter. companies use commercial websites that end in .com. other organizagions, clubs, etc use .net and .org. most people looking for honda on the web would go to honda.com before even thinking bout .net. next vtec.net will go? pshh.
I don't know if suing at such a time is a good idea. This is a critical time for Nissan and I don't think they should be wasting time on matters like this right now.
They can't afford to waste any money on unimportant things like this, but thats just my opinion.
I think they should get that domain but this is not the time for it.

I must admit that I felt a bit sorry for this computer company before I read your post. Now i'm all ticked off about the fact that their taking advantage of Nissan. I'm all for Nissan suing these people now. And if it does cost a little money now and they win it will be well worth it in the future.

I think Nissan isn't spending a whole lot of time on this, they probably sticked out of house lawyers on it who aren't involved in the day to day or strategic planning.

Nissan does not mean "made in Japan". It literally translates as "a daily output". It's best understood to mean "production".

Sorry, but in direct/blind translation, it means "sun output"...But...!!!
Nissan, stands for, "Nipon(Japan) Product" or "Product of Nipon(Japan)". Ni, as in Nihon, as the Japanese/Nihon calls themselves, is the character for the sun. Nipon is what the Japanese calls Japan. Why do you think it's called the land of the rising sun? Nipon translated means the land of the rising sun!!! Direct translation comes out to be "sun origin".
History lesson, Nipon/Japan is located east of China, and in the early days, people thought the sun actually does rise from the island group off the coast of China, and called it the land of the rising sun, Nipon/Japan.
Now, a lesson in language, in that the word Japan is spelled in German. Meaning, Japan reads as Yapan! Cantonese speakers, when they read the character for Nipon, pronounce it as Yapan!!
So in German, Japan is correctly pronouced, but when changed into English, like many words, are pronounced incorrectly!!!
So to cap it off, Nissan, as in the corporation, means Product of Japan. Why, think of VW. What does VW mean? People's Car (Volk's Wagen, pronounce as, Folk's Vagen) VW was created in an era of blind nationalism. Guess when Nissan was created? Around the same time when Japan/Nipon was caught up in blind nationalism, and wanted something like people's car, but in Asian culture, the focus is on the country, hence, Product of Japan. Yup, that's not a typo. Nissan for the longest time was a nationally owned company backed by the government of Nipon/Japan until it was privatized later.
Cars imported into the US was sold under the name of Datsun, (son of rabbit), in fear that selling a product with the name of a country would not go too well with the consumers. The Pickup has always been called Datsun from the beginning, and that was the first vehicle Nissan imported into the US, and very likely, without being there, was the reason why Datsun was used for the longest time to save time on getting a name.

So what you can speak Japanese? But do you really understand the meaning of the Kanji? I'm a Mandarin speaker and fluent in Chinese. There are so many ways to inteprete ru or Ni. The most basic meaning is sun!!! Day is drived from the Sun meaning. Now, for us chinese speaker, when we refer to Japan, we call it sun origin (rought translation), and we don't call it daily origin!!! So, depending on whos intepretation you want to go with, but I would stick to a much older languages' intrepretation.
So, go and really look at the definition for Ni as in Nipon... http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/tongue.gif

Guys, I don't want to sound like a dictator but...lets try to keep the conversation about the subject. I know it's not always easy. But this time it's drifted way off the original post.
Why don't we start a new topic or new subject thread? Either meaning of "The Meaning of Nissan in Japanese" in the General Nissan Area or "Japanese Language" in off-topic?
Sorry.

Ok, so are there any progress in Nissan's case?
Volkswagen won against VW.net couple days ago.
