View Full Version : should I mess with my non-vtec LS engine?

So I've had a non-vtech b18 ls engine sitting in my parents garage for quite sometime now...I dont really have the room for it at my apartment but I can work it on it every so often at a DIY garage that doesnt charge for engine storage.

For sake of complication and funds, I will be staying with the non-vtec setup. It needs to be broken down and cleaned as well as new valves, springs and maybe a piston or two...killed due to a failed timing belt.

My thoughts of approach are like this:

Remove head from block, disassemble head and send out for cleaning and resurface. replace valves, springs, and seats with newer and/or beefed up units, new cams (stage 2), adjustable cam gears, spiffy valve cover paint etc.

Disassemble block, replace pistons rings and rods with newer honda OEM units from a Vtech assembly (type-R), GSR oil pump set up arp head studs and resurface, OEM headgasket or performance version.

Possibly run a small turbo at low boost for daily reliability.

I have one small issue though...I dont own a honda...I'm always on the look out for one, pref a ef hatch or a crx.

Im tired of seeing the junk pile higher and higher on the motor at my parents place so I figure I would just mess around with it a little.

Sound like a good plan, any suggestions?

Yea man, you should put that turbo from the SR20DET into the VG30DETT. Also, you can replace the piston with the ones from VQ30DE and make it bigger into the VQ35DE. A Z32 brakes will also make it fit with the S14 which will be perfect fit for the F31.

Oh wait this is Honduh talk, I thought it was about Nissans.

Sounds like someone was a Honda's lunch :26:

I created a thread about this already. The consensus on the thread was "Relax, don't do it."

so you're saying its not worth my time and I should use the money that I would be spending on 5spd swap parts for my 98 240SX...thats kinda what I was thinking on my way home yesterday...glad were on the same page

i dont exactly hope to have one i just figured why not..its easier to spend the money on this engine and find something to put it into because the work i want to do my car isnt possible because its my only car...then again I could use the same money to buy a POS and then that would allow me to work on my car.

i bought an oil filter that had a hole in it and it went all over the engine bay so i figure I would pull the engine out during the next t-belt change (this winter) and clean everything replace some gaskets and maybe paint some parts and then next summer I want to do a 5spd swap so I would need another car to drive during those periods which could be pretty extended due to time constraints...i guess the best option for me after thinking about it and talking it over is to get a POS and then do the work on the my 240 like i really want to...thanks guys
