View Full Version : Honda/Acura's Mistakes (they've made quite a few!)

This quote brought back some memories that I am sure Honda/Acura would love for us to forget:
Acura hasnt really had a rough period as far as product goes...
That quote sparked an interest in me to start a thread on that very topic... As Nissan/Infiniti enthusiasts, we are well aware of their mishaps...but people seem to forget that Honda/Acura are not as perfect as they are seemed to be. They have had their share of F#@k ups as well....
Like this crappy CRX replacement: Del Sol

the 2.2 CL:
http://www.autoreviews.com/North/Acuracl.jpg
That thing above replaced the gorgeous Legend Coupe? WTF???
A rebadged Isuzu for Honda? The Honda Passport...LOL
http://www.theautochannel.com/media/photos/honda/1997/97_honda_passport.jpg
And worst of all: an Isuzu trying to be an Acura! LMAO! The Acura SLX (resembles SUX don't it?)
http://www.theautochannel.com/media/photos/acura/96_acura_slx_1.jpg
It's amazing what people forget...:caged:
And I've driven the 2008 Accord Sedan....not too sure how to label that one yet...it has the most flaws I ever seen in a Honda Accord to date. The quality is lacking compared to the previous Gen.

I thought the first 3 were relatively successful models for honda/acura. The last one obviously was a bust. I mean if you're going to emulate something... don't make it a crappy isuzu. Or if you're isuzu... don't make it a trailblazer.

I thought this was a big design disaster too compared to the prev. Gen. With it's Eagle Vision Nose and shelf like dashboard..I was really scratching my head in question when it came out for the 1992 model year:

really? i thought this one was great. the generation after this one made me go wtf because it looked less modern than this design. The only thing that bugged me about this one was the tail lights. felt they just chopped the butt off an otherwise great looking car. I really love the long dash too, felt like a futuristic car.

True, but all of those cars sold better than Nissan's screwups.

Isuzus are perfectly competent trucks, but luxury SUVs they certainly are not.
I wish the NSX got more updates and improvements.

My wife (gf at the time) owned a '98 Prelude. We both loved the car, but the interior design was blah. I'd actually pick one up to have as a beat-around commuter if we could find one that was not riced up....

Definately sells alot better than: NX, stanzas, axxes, Q45(2002-2007), Quests (current), QX56, old Frontier, and what else ???
For Honda, I like to add the first gen Odyssey. Give Honda credit for not giving up and make things right the second time.
How about Sterling, anyone remember?

Calling a Sterling a Honda is like calling a Dodge Stratus a Mitsubishi or a New Sentra a Renault.

09-25-2007, 04:56 AM
was that my quote?
anyhow I think the only few cars that were sales bust were probably the Acura Trooper and the Vigor.
Del Sol: Niche Market car sold very well with the small engine layout, I see them everywhere still
CL: I might be biased because I owned a 95 accord but they were great cars that ushered in the next CL design which has done very well
Honda Passport: again another Isuzu trade but it did its job of getting SUV owners into honda for the upcoming Element, Pilot, and Ridgeline and it sold well.
Yes the Acura Trooper was a blunder
The Prelude: the only thing that stops me from getting one of them as a beater is the horrible dash layout, too much 80's future car for me, I do love the last gens though.
If its my quote like I think it is, I stand by it...the only thing holding them back is lack of a V8/RWD or AWD available on all models like Audi and maybe a few more gadgets
Bumnah
09-25-2007, 07:24 AM
the vigor, blah!
the prelude: it was actually a production test model i believe. prelude type sh was the test vehicle for new sh-awd setup offered by acura.
slx = sux can't agree more
passport = crapola as well
delsol = i actually liked.
2.2cl was alright.
i have no idea what the point of my post was. Enjoy It!

Vigor was weird ... a Volvo, by Honda!
Acura struggled with filling in the slot between the Integra and Legend.
I like Sterlings. I like old Alfa Romeos and Mitsubishis too. But when it comes time to buy, I'm probably all Accord.

Mistake in what way? It's all in how you define a "mistake." From a sales and profit standpoint, yes, the NSX probably was a mistake. From the standpoint of taking a new marque and setting it on the map with a flagship product that proved that Acura was not going to just be a re-badged Honda with leather seats, it was a success. Styling success is totally subjective but I personally think the NSX has a timeless look. Like the Ducati 996 which is 10 years old and is still the hottest looking bike on the road.

I think the NSX and 1990 300ZX, RX8, were the cars that caused the euro brand to raised the bar. Before these cars, there wer nothing hi perforamnce/interesting from Japan.
Sterling:
I've always throught that was a Honda that tries to tap into the luxo market.

Similarly, I thought the cars you listed helped prove that just because its a sportscar didn't mean it couldnt be a daily driver.

NSX is pure SEX.
Loved all legends...esp the coupes. Never cared for the CL/TL Vigor RL replacement rigamorow since.
Insight..was okay for one of the 1st hybrids..but I always dreamed they would put a good engine in it...defag it so to speak (get rid of the gheyness e.g. wheels/wheel covers, fender skirts, hybrid crap), and turn it into a new CRX.
Ridgeline is great for what it is, an Accord truck. Think of it as Honda's ElCamino then it seems more acceptable.

The RL is still the Honda Legend in Japan.

nsx = awesome if you don't like this car, you are not a car guy.
insight = pretty cool
ridgeline = smart pickup truck. when it's released in a diesel turbo, i plan to purchase it.
i'm a big honda/acura fan, lately i've been disappointed in the acura stuff. looks too much like a cadillac with the sharp corners and stuff. the TL is nice, primariliy the mdx and the rdx i don't like.

09-26-2007, 11:48 AM
Dude acura wishes it had the style of Caddy. Honda ridgeline isn't a bad truck... gas mileage sucks though. Needs a larger engine that doesnt struggle with an empty bed. Towing is this truck's worst nightmare.
Rice_N_motioN
09-26-2007, 12:08 PM
Because the Ridgeline is a Oddessy in desguise. Not bad, but not really a truck.
The Insight looks ghey for a reason, it's the only car with a .25 drag ratio. the lowest of any production car. The last car to accomplish that was the Opel Calibra.
Acura's whole identity is Accords in disguise. CL, an Accord Coupe, TL, An Accord. TSX, a euro Accord

The concept of the small luxury SUV is moot. I'd rather have a station wagon.

Indeed, except they don't. Too many ads showing the Ridgeline out in the country pretending to do trucky things.

And good reason for Honda to build it.
Canada, like the rest of the world, has compact sedans as their best selling vehicle.
The Honda Civic is still the number 1 car in Canada.
Not trucks or midsized sedans.

The NSX was not a flop to anyone whom ever drove it or wished they could have. It was a Ferrari for those whom could never afford/justify purchasing a prancing pony car.
The Del Slow!!! :D The only thing tinier than the car was the output of the engine. Sure, you could put a turbo in it and it wasn't bad, but it was doomed to be a cult car at best from the day it hit the showrooms.
I guess the difference between the two descriptions really is my opinion - but I wouldn't be caught dead in a Del Slow and I wouldn't mind being buried in an NSX! :)

P.S. I owned an '89 Legend and it was a great car. Wonderful lines and comfort and ultra-reliable up until about 120K.

i loved the delsol, i rolled one at 80mph due to **** pa highways and it held up just fine. the rear hoop didnt even budge.
that and my first car was a 86 legend. awesome car and the amount of luxury and power it had for a 86 model was amazing. there are 2 for sale in my town right now. one is the same one i had, 2 tone brown/gold and they want 6500 for it. the other is a semi beat white one and they want 2700 for that. wanst there a thread about resale value around here somewhere?
this pic does not do the paint justice. the top half changed color from a grey to brown to gold.

Acura made a mistake changing the slogan from the original "Precision Crafted Performance." It was simple and focused. I can't even remember what slogans that used after that. I guess they were just being honest, because other than the NSX, Type-S/R's, their cars really weren't that performance oriented.
