Competes with: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry
Looks like: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry
Drivetrain: 175-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with five-speed manual or five-speed automatic, or 190-hp, 2.7-liter V-6 with five-speed automatic; front-wheel drive
Hits dealerships: Late 2008Not two months after sister company Hyundai debuted a freshened Sonata, Kia followed suit with the midsize Optima. Though the cars shared architecture in previous years, they’ve been on divergent paths for some time now, Kia says. Where the upgraded Sonata’s new face found general acceptance, our reaction to the Optima is lukewarm. The car’s sheet metal went from Plane Jane to Frank Caliendo, meaning you can find a good impression of a lot of cars here: the grille and taillights look like those on the new and two-generations-old Accord, respectively; the headlights are all Camry; and the trunk and rear bumper remind us of the Malibu.

Both engines have been upgraded, but the cabin remains mostly the same, save for some cooler electroluminescent gauges in the sporty SX trim level. (“Sporty” is a relative term here, as in, whoa, check out that sporty Camry SE!) Other SX features include 17-inch rims, a sport-tuned suspension and mirrors with integrated turn signals. The LX and EX trims remain, and new standard features include a USB port, which takes iPod compatibility beyond what simpler auxiliary jacks allow. Six airbags and active head restraints are also standard, but we wish ABS and stability control were, too. They’re optional, but product strategy manager Ralph Tjoa said that may change before the car arrives at dealerships.

This is a very good improvement from the previous totally nondescript molten ball.

Still looks subpar though. But at least much more attractive than this nondescript ball of blob.

If this thing wants to compete with the Accord and Camry, I don't get why they didn't use the Sonata's 3.8 liter V6. Heck, since it's capable of producing 310 hp, why not one up then and use 275 or so?

Pricing issue?
The Kia Optima V6 185 hp is only $20,085, CHEAPER THAN THE I4 CAMRY (CE $20,335, LE $21,790).

The 3.8-liter, 268 hp Azera SE is only $26,230, with a $3,000 rebate, so only $23,230 for a 268 hp Azera.

Just get the Azera if you want a 268 hp V6 Hyundai. Cheaper than a V6 Camry/Altima/Accord.
Good deal if you're ok with the looks.

The whole point of having a V6 is to have some power... Why would someone roll the dice with a Kia having a "gas hungry" v6 with almost the same power as a camry with a 4Banger...? IMHO, its still an ugly ball of metal... getting there, but light years behind Hundai... Not to mention Hundai's 100k warranty...

At least the 4 banger in this car seems pretty good - 175hp from 2.4 liters is good for the class. Drop in the 3.8 and they will be good to go.
