Lets forget about the LOOKS for a moment. I do like this car, but one thing I'm not sure about. Every video that I see and hear, the engine and exhaust note just doesn't sound good. Is it just me?

When I heard the exhaust it immediately reminded me of…. my old motorbike.
It was a great sound for a sport bike but I don’t like it so much for a car

Well I wouldnt expect a camcorder mic to do justice to engine sounds. Clarkson comented on how quite the engine is when sitting in the car, so Audi might not have been going for that "ferrari" sound.

I've listened to about 10 different videos, and they all sound the same. I guess I'm just saying for a $115,000 car, it should sound 10 times better than this. To me, it doesn't sound good at all for a sports car.

audi makes the worse sounding engines from the outside. inside the car it sounds ok, but from the outside every a4/a6 ive ever heard sounds clunky and terribly unrefined. from the inside they sound ok, but from the outside it doesnt sounds smooth at all.

It sounds like the engine sounds from F1 video games or nascar video games.

Seen and heard this one in person and love it. They ran a bunch of test mules through the mountains of Tennessee and unless they changed some things from last summer, it sounds amazing in person.

I've seen some vids of straightpiped S4s on youtube and they sounded incredible. Since this is a similar engine, I would imagine it has potential, but I've not heard one in person, and the OE exhaust could be a weird design.

Any comments on late model Volvo exhaust notes? I'm in the market. Don't ask. :p

i just drove that volve hardtop convertible the other day. 225hp on a piss weak turbo is just dissapointing. It doesnt sound very refined either... kinda like the clunky audi engines.

Weak, clunky, conservative design. I'm in love with the Volvo C70.

I think its because it revs higher than your used to and heaving a V8 belching out such a high pitch is weird. I bet if it just sayted at lower RPM it would sound a lot more "normal" sounding. As for audi not able to make a descent sounding engine. I have to disagree, espcially since I just came from a Quattro event at Robeling road last weekend. Go listen to an RS4, RS5 or even a B5 S4. The RS4 is an extremely low growl and sounds amazing from inside and outside the vehicle. You might have something with the 1.8/2.0Ts but they are 4Bangers and making any 4banger sound good is next to impossible... (IMHO) The 3.2l is a VR6 which I am a bit partial to since I owned one but I have always loved their engine notes.

TypeX,
check out swedespeed.com Good resource if you are into Volvos. I had an 850 Turbo as my first car and that thing was a BLAST. With just a chip and exhaust it was close to 300hp and would beat Z28s all day long.

I personally like Audi over Infiniti (For the time being). This happened after my dad bought an 07 S8. I think their engines sound great but even better if they have aftermarket exhaust. Check out this MTM supercharged rs4 (same engine as R8) with exhaust... http://youtube.com/watch?v=FBkX8GS5FoY utterly amazing. Oh and just for kicks, S8 with MTM exhaust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YUc1x60a-M

The R8 is definitely a car that sounds 10x better in person. Having driven one, I would say it sounds incredible at WOT. Same goes for the RS4 in S mode. Nothing beats the sound of a V8.

Man, that is serious abuse if that is a cold engine.

S5 has a very good sound, just perfect, even stock

Sound aside, for 115,000 bucks I wish it performed better than a 70,000 zo6.

Passed one today and couldn't even hear make out an exhaust note.

After listening to that first video i have to say the R8 has a fantastic exhaust note. You guys know its a V8 right? I mean, you're not expecting an ear splitting turbo 4 sound or anyhting.

At idle it sounds like a mildly cammed big block, at full bore it sounds like a race car. All in all, well done Audi.

I think the Audi R8 looks like shiz. Give me a Citroën SM.

my friend asked about this car today.
i thought it was the TT replacement.
i didn't know it was based on the Gallardo.

wikipidia says
In the production of the Audi R8, 70 workers fit 5000 unique parts by hand - the factory produces 25 cars a day. Ninety-five lasers inspect the entire car in 5 seconds to ensure that over 220 measurements are within 0.1 mm of the programmed plans

wow, wtf

the engine is the same as with a B7 RS4.
the sound is like there is either baffles for the exhaust or some kind of variable intake working topped with rev limiter.
but some video on a dyno sounds a lot more "normal" so maybe under load it's operating more normally as opposed to someone just reving it.

Looks so sexy in all black.

Still have yet to see or hear one in person though.

I saw one on the road a few days ago and it does sound a little odd.. The guy was going easy on the gas - so I didn't get a good sense of what it sounded like when pushed. But when driven lightly, it's still loud - and a little odd sounding...
