TOKYO (AP) - Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it will recall 628,239 minivans in Japan due to an installation flaw that could lead to cracks in the fuel tank.

Subject to the recall are the Noah and Voxy models manufactured between Nov. 7, 2001 and May 31, 2007, the Japanese automaker said in a filing to the transport ministry.

The problem involves the area around a bolt on the rear, left hand side of the fuel tank, Toyota said. High-stress driving conditions, such as on extremely curvy roads, could lead to cracks, which may then result in leaks in some cases, it said.

Sixteen such defects have been reported. None has led to accident or injury, Toyota said.

The company has not released how much the recall will cost, spokeswoman Kayo Doi said.

Toyota's latest recall comes as the company grapples with maintaining its reputation for quality while continuing to expand globally.

Last year Toyota, maker of the Prius gas-electric hybrids, overtook General Motors Corp. as the world's top automaker by global production. It made a record 9,497,754 vehicles worldwide in 2007, up 5.3 percent from the previous year.

But since 2006 President Katsuaki Watanabe has apologized repeatedly at news conferences for a rising number of recalls and quality concerns. In a speech last month at the Japan National Press Club, he acknowledged that the company's rapid global growth was partly behind the problems.

Toyota recalled 809,394 vehicles last year in Japan, Doi said.

The automaker also said it would recall 2,623 Noah and Voxy minivans for a computer program problem.

Glad it's not Nissan.

Glad it's not Nissan.

Nissan has its share of problems too, fact is ALL automakers do.......

Toyota problems are tiny versus the volume of cars they sell....

Growing at the rate that Toyota is growing is nothing but trouble and things can get out of hand but guess what? They have the money to deal with it and turn things around....

atleast they acknowledge such issues. i don't think i've ever heard of any ceo talk about their short comings. normally it's "everything is so great, god it's great being us. we're the best! YAY!"

Technically Toyota isn't "recalling" all of their old Tacomas, but it's buying the ones back that have a rusty frame...for 150% of their KBB Excellent Value. Yikes!!!

Honda recalls 80,000 Civics over handbrake safety flaw

Thousands of cars were being recalled by a leading manufacturer yesterday because of a fault with the handbrake, which has led to dozens of cars rolling away from where they were parked.

Drivers of more than 79,000 Honda Civics were being urged to have their cars checked after the manufacturer received several complaints and started an investigation.

Engineers found that there was a small safety risk if the release button was knocked by drivers when applying the handbrake. Honda has promised owners a free handbrake to solve the problems.

No! That's the wrong news!!! It was supposed to have read: Nike Corp. recalls 290,000,000 left shoes due to faulty glue which may cause the sole to separate from the rest of the shoe causing the wearer to lose footing and crash.

Anything made by human hands will have its shortcomings. And I'm sure Nissan wouldn't mind being as big as Toyota with the relatively few quality control issues they have.....;)
