Guys need some feedback. I frequently coast by shifting into neutral going down hills, coming to stops, etc. Yesterday, 4/24, I shifted into neutral coasting down a hill, going 34 mph, and heard a knocking or clicking as soon as I shifted into neutral. When I shifted back into drive it went away. Later in the day as I was headed home, got up to about 45 and shifted into neutral. Same knocking noise. Had a coworker go with me at lunch today and he heard it too. Only does it in neutral and over 25 mph. I only have 1800 miles on it.

I'm taking it in next week but anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, I would go in for that check-up and get some peace of mind.

No I have never experienced anything like that, but I must also add that I never coast in neutral. I'm not being judgmental on your driving habits but the Rogue is not an 18 wheeler. Going into neutral (to save fuel ?) is very doubtful. That's what the higher bands, 5 and 6, are supposed to produce.

When you are neutral, you are disconnecting the drive-train component, and losing the natural handling that the vehicle has while in "gear." Going down a long hill the engine provides natural braking that is not there in neutral.

That natural handling not present in neutral can be felt very readily during improper cornering. If you do not slow down before a long sweeping bend, but enter it too quickly and drift, the vehicle is sloppy and feels venerable. But, if slowed first with a brake or downshift, that same vehicle now accelerating into that curve is stable and grabs the road.

Proper functioning of the VDC and AWD components is premised on being in gear so that the electronics can adjust for slip-age.

There was a winter driving technique stating that descending a slippery hill in neutral would keep the wheels rolling so that you could pump those brakes. Now of course it is not recommended so that a lower gear supplies engine braking and a constant pressure allows the ABS system to supply the necessary adjustments to each wheel.

Ask the SM what he thinks of all of this and let us know.

When going down a gentle slope I shift into neutral to save gas in my Altima Coupe. It's pretty much the same engine as the Rogue, I believe, but with a different CVT. Mine doesn't make any knocking noises though. If you can recreate the knocking 100% of the time, then it's probably a good idea to take it in. Also make sure that the A/C is off...on my Versa the A/C Compressor makes a knocking noise all by itself (although not enough to warrant any concerns).

So how did that appointment turn out?

I have a 96 silverado with the 5.7 When I start it up it has a knocking sound that is fairly loud coming from the motor. The oil level is good. The check engine light is on due to an o2 sensor would this have anything to do with it? What could it be?
