I have some old Koni yellows for my s14 and wanted to know if there's any way, short of sending them in, to gain a better idea of the shocks condition. I always thought that being able to compress a shock by hand was a no-no but Konis do that by design for adjustment purposes. Anyone have any ideas?

You should be able to compress the shock by hand VERY slowly, with significant resistance. It should provide smooth resistance in both directions, with no "light spots."

If it passes that test, and isn't leaking, chances are that the dampers are at least in reasonable condition and more than fine for street usage. If you're talking about getting the last little bit out of a set of dampers... well, I'd say selling those and going with something a little more performance oriented like Koni's 861x series would be a good move.

if you can find a local suspension or race shop, have them put them on a shock dyno and know for sure

Only the fronts should compress easily. The rears should be under pressure. Are they front or rears your testing?
