I have had my y2k GXE Max for about seven months now, and I still love the car. My main reasons for purchasing were that Max was fast, smooth, silent, and roomy. I presently have about 20Km reading on the odometer.

After about 10,000 miles I noticed that the automatic transmission would at times abruptly do a hard down shift from second to first gear while accelerating briskly from a slow speed. It will also shift hard from 1st to 2nd if the shift happens around 3500 RPM. I had the dealer look at it, but they said it was normal. Does anyone else have abrupt/hard shifts from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st? The rest of the shifts are perfectly smooth, almost undetectable.

The auto transmission in Max is definitely geared toward fuel economy, and keeping the interior quiet. I think that Nissan should have installed a sport shift mode for times when we auto-box Maxima driver’s want to stir things up. I think it (the automatic transmission) also caps a lot of the 222 HP. My G-Tech pro says that my 0-60 times are around 8.5 seconds. Not even close to the 5 speed numbers. Have any of you 5 speeders checked out your 0-60. I would doubt that you could get the advertised (motor trend) 6.6 seconds.

There's a TSB for automatic Maximas that will improve the shift between 1-2.

You probably don't see it because it's an old topic. When you're in the Maxima forum click on Show topics from 90 days ago.

Then you'll see "2k Maxima Service Bulletin...if you own an automatic READ THIS!"

There is also a vb (valve body) upgrade from a guy named Don in TX. The service bulliten will help, but I hear the vb upgrade is one of the best upgrades available for us auto guys. It costs ~450 plus return shipping, and will make for much better shifting (some say comparable to manual). try finding Don here. http://users3.cgiforme.com/Maxima/cfmboard1.html

Armed with the TSB, I plan to head back to the dealer for my transmission upgrade. I will keep you guys posted.
