One-size-fits-all products are compromises. They aren't the best at anything, but they are good at a number of things.
Is the Subaru Forester the best compromise for a do-it-all car?
I want something with AWD for when I got to the desert and mountains (dirt roads and light snow-- no serious off-road action), decent gas mileage, cargo room, and a reasonable price. If I want to add decent performance I can get the turbo version.
I've also considered the Frontier Crew Cab SE and Xterra S.
Any other suggestions?

I did not see cheap maintenance on your list so I would go with an Allroad.

OK, I'll add cheap maintenance and decent ergonomics. I think that will rule out German offerings.

why not? i've got an outback, i would suggest a legacy (or impreza/outback) to anybody. the only thing i don't like about it is the suspension is a bit soft. there are enough versions that you could easily find something that fits your style.

For about the same money as a turbo Forester, you can get a V-6 RAV 4 which is not only larger inside, but is faster. Gas mileage is also pretty close with the edge going to the RAV4.

And with a couple bolt ons you can have a high 12 second SUV.
I say get the Forester.

I didn't compromise, so I got an Acura Integra.

HAHA! I say go with the Forester XT. Solid, turbo, and comes in a manual.
