Does anyone know of an easy way to reach/change the oil filter on a 2000
Altima without sticking your entire body underneath the car? Most other
cars I have owned provided much easier access to the filter with exposing
yourself to dangerous propositions, such as sticking your head underneath
3500 lbs of automobile.
Thanks

Well, it's designed that if you remove the right front wheel and the plastic cladding around there, you can reach the oil filter. All of Nissan's newer FWD cars are designed this way: Quest, Maxima, I30, etc...

Actually you don't need to remove the wheel. Just turn the wheels to the right all the way and you should have full access. At least that's what I do with my '97 Maxima. Then all you do is remove the black plastic panel and you have full access to the drain plug and filter. Hope that helps.

Even though I have never replaced the filter myself, I saw one a VQ block a recent Stillen event. Was I imagining or is the VQ oil filter really small?

Yep the VQ filter and KD filter are small... about 2/3 the size of a coke can.

Working for a dealership as a tech I can tell U that EVERY Nissan but the SR20DE powered ones have been using a 9E000 filter since the '00 Model year. VQ Max, 98-up Alt, 97-up 240SX, 96-up Path, 99-up Quest,98-up Frontier, Xterra, they all use the same filter. Older Nissans used a bigger filter. Its very simple the change the filter on a Quest or a Maxima, they are right on the right front. 1.6L Sentras and all Altimas are on the back of the engine block, U need to crawl under the car and get it off, there is NO way U can get it off without getting under the car. SR20DE powered Sentras/200SXs have the filter right on top, next to the intake manifold on the top, passenger side. All newer-96-up Nissan trucks with V6 have the filter behind the front splash shield, U have to take off about 10 screws and the filter is right behind it, U don't need to get under the car. Older V6 Nissans- trucks, the filter is on the pass side under the exhaust manifold, I recomend U do the oil change when the engine is cold or U WILL burn urself trying to get the filer off- the manifold is right there and its HOT. All KA24 powered trucks have the filter on the pass side right behind the wheel, U have to take the rubber spalsh shield off and the filter is right there. 89-94 Maximas with VG30E engines in em have the filter on the BACK of the engine, U can see if when U pop the hood by standing on the drivers side of the car. Its pointing up, I recomend U have some brake cleaner when U take it off. Some of the oil that was in the filter will drop on the exhaust and it will SMOKE and stink like hell... so I recomend U wash that residual oil down. 92-94 Maxima SEs with the VE30DE engines have the filter on the front right infront of the oil pan on the pass side. 90-96 300ZXs have the filter under the car next to the transmission bell housing. All Nissans take 4 quarts of oil, 1.6L Sentras take about 3.75 and older L series engines like in the old Maximas-810 Datsuns, and 240-260-280Zs they take about 4.75 quarts of oil. Check ur owners manual for exac specs.

I have to disagree on the S14. It still uses the larger oil filter shared by the VG30E, KA24E.
